Senior wins in main draw before falling at ITA Midwest Regional Championship
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Aspasia Avgeri extended her winning streak Saturday to nine in a row before the sensational run finally came to an end.
The senior from Athens, Greece began her day with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jennifer Timotin of Michigan State at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship hosted by the Spartans.
In the second round, Avgeri encountered her first setback since Sept. 20 when sixth-seeded and No. 79-ranked Shiori Fukuda from Ohio State prevailed 6-2, 7-5.
After losing the first match of the 2019-20 season at the Purdue Invite, Avgeri would go on to win her next nine matches.
On the doubles scene, the combo of Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya KIzelbasheva began to emerge after a strong performance last week at the prestigious ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
The Blue Demon duo won their first two matches at the ITA Midwest Regional and advanced to the round of 16 before coming up short 8-3 to Notre Dame's Julia Lilien and Bess Waldram.
Avgeri, Antonijevic and Kizelbasheva will be looking to get back on the winning track when DePaul returns to action Nov. 1 at the Kentucky Invite.
