Blue Demons win 13 matches in last two days of invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – DePaul women's tennis closed out the Purdue Invite after recording 13 victories in 18 matches in the final two days of the invitational, including six wins on Sunday. The Scarlet and Blue now have a two-month hiatus before they begin play again in January 2026.
The Blue Demons faced the host Purdue Boilermakers at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
In doubles, Hannah Smith and Clara Nilsson silenced the offensive attack from Boilermaker duo Kathryn Wilson/Fatima Gutierrez, taking the match 6-0.
Sasha Stula and Yasemin Pehlivan teamed up for the second time in as many days when they battled Ashlie Wilson and Sophya Devas. The Blue Demon tandem controlled the match, winning 6-4. Stula and Pehlivan quickly developed chemistry on the court; the pair is 2-0 and played for the first time together this season on Saturday.
The other newly formed duo of Helin Alvarez and Roberta Sechi, competed well against Ece Gencer/Emmi Kolyszko but lost 6-4.
Shifting to singles, Stula came into the match red-hot, winning six of the last seven matches. The Gifu, Japan native moved out to an early lead after a 6-1 score. However, Purdue's Ece Gencer won the second set 6-3, setting up a decisive 10-point tiebreaker. Gencer's momentum from the second set carried into the tiebreaker, securing the final frame 10-5 and claiming the match.
After playing two hard-fought matches on Friday and Saturday, Smith looked to control the match from the beginning against Devas. The senior did exactly that, earning a straight-sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Nilsson won handily in her first two singles contests, but her final match of the fall went the distance. The Malmö, Sweden native won the first set 7-5, but fell in the second 6-3. The freshman pulled away late in the tiebreaker to win 10-6, giving DePaul its third singles victory of the day.
Nilsson joins Smith as the only two Blue Demons to win all three singles matches at the Purdue Invite.
Pehlivan squared off against Ashlie Wilson in her final singles competition of the invitational. Pehlivan won the first set, 6-3, but lost a close contest in game two, 7-6 (2). Pehlivan made the most of the decisive final round with a 10-5 triumph.
Roberta Sechi took the court versus Kayal Gownder, but came up short 6-3, 6-2.
Helin Alvarez finished the fall portion of the schedule on a positive note. The redshirt sophomore beat Gutierrez 6-2, 6-2, securing her second consecutive match victory.
