Third time in six games Blue Demons have scored 90 points or more
CHICAGO – The twin impediments of complacency and overconfidence for DePaul were nowhere to be found in the Wintrust Arena building or anywhere else in the South Loop on Tuesday.
After toppling nationally ranked Miami over the weekend and rising to No. 16 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls, DePaul did not slow the roll in a 94-65 victory over Milwaukee.
Sophomore Lexi Held led the way with 19 points while classmate Sonya Morris filled the stat sheet with 18 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Keke Rimmer had the best game of her career with 13 points and eight boards, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor and Kelly Campbell finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Even the 90-points-a-game Blue Demons (5-1) would be hard-pressed to match their second quarter when they shot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the floor and lit up the huge Wintrust Arena scoreboard with 35 points to lead by 32 at halftime.
Four foul shots by Held and Jolene Daninger along with baskets from Chante Stonewall and Rimmer produced a 67-34 margin at the third quarter media timeout.
Morris scored inside and came right back with a three-pointer for a 72-35 point lead---the largest of the game to that point. Another Morris three and Kayla Caudle's breakaway layup made it 77-44 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Blue Demons jumped out to a 12-4 lead from the opening tip on the strength of three-pointers by Campbell and Held. Milwaukee (2-4) came within four points when Daninger's foul shots and another Campbell three made it a nine-point game.
Held and Morris hit back-to-back shots---Morris from deep---and DePaul took a 24-12 advantage into the second quarter.
Dee Bekelja and Held combined for three-straight hoops as the lead expanded to 30-14. Freshmen Caudle and Keke Rimmer sparkled in the middle of the second quarter with three baskets in a row including a three by Rimmer.
If those two get it going, DePaul's already deep lineup could number in double figures. Held hit a deep three-pointer less than four minutes until halftime for a 42-22 advantage.
Caudle scored twice more down low and Campbell buried a shot followed by a three-point play as coach Doug Bruno's team went up 54-26.
Held finished the first half with a flourish. First came a rhythm three-pointer followed by a wicked crossover move that freed up the smooth sophomore for a swish.
Held had 17 points at the break and Campbell 11 as their team built a 59-27 lead. Caudle had come through with six points and three boards. A telltale stat: DePaul had forced 17 turnovers by halftime.
