Reed's Double-Double Leads Blue Demons in Opener Over Alcorn State

DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena Wednesday night against Chicago
CHICAGO - A 17-point, 11-rebound Paul Reed double-double led the way Tuesday night as DePaul bested Alcorn State, 72-54, at Wintrust Arena to open the 2019-20 regular season. Charlie Moore and Romeo Weems rounded out the Blue Demons in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively.
As a team, the Blue Demons (1-0) shot .500 (29-58) from the field while finishing 7-of-20 (.350) from three-point land. DePaul posted 38 points in the paint to go with 16 points off turnovers and 19 bench points.
DePaul roared ahead in the opening two minutes, with two three-pointers from Moore sandwiching one long ball from Reed to open up a 9-0 lead for the Blue Demons.
The Blue Demons kept the early pressure on, and with 14:36 left in the opening half, Moore found Reed in transition for an emphatic dunk to make it 17-0. Over the next six minutes, the Braves would get on the scoreboard, but with eight minutes to play before the break, the DePaul lead stood strong at 29-17.
Over the first 20 minutes, DePaul found consistent success with the three ball and with four minutes left in the half, following back-to-back threes from Moore and Weems, the score was up to 20 points at 41-21 as DePaul stood 6-for-8 on shots from deep. The Blue Demons would go into the half in front, 45-26.
Leading the way for DePaul at the intermission, Moore and Reed had 11 points apiece while Reed chipped in six rebounds and Moore added five assists. The host shot .633 (19-30) from the field in the opening half, including .600 (6-of-10) from behind the three-point line.
Out of the break, Reed scored the first four points for DePaul, pushing the host's advantage to 23 points. With eight minutes to play DePaul had worked in 10 different players as their lead stood at 24 points, 59-35. In the closing five minutes, after opening up the lead to as many as 27 points, Alcorn State would cut the deficit to 17 points, but the Braves would not get any closer.
The Blue Demons return to action in less than 24 hours as the University of Chicago travels to Wintrust Arena for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The game can be seen on FS2 while WIND (560 AM) will be the home of the action on the radio.
