Blue Demons win second game in as many days to open 2019-20 season
CHICAGO – Charlie Moore led four players in double figures with 17 points as DePaul won for the second time in as many days with an 84-55 win over Chicago. Markese Jacobs added 16 while Jaylen Butz totaled 14 and Romeo Weems added 11 points on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena.
As a team DePaul (2-0) shot .589 (33-56) from the field to go with .353 (6-17) shooting from three-point land. The Blue Demons out rebounded the Maroons, 41-33, on the game while finishing with 50 points in the paint, 32 bench points and 18 fast break points.
DePaul jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as a Weems jump shot opened the scoring. Chicago would respond with back-to-back threes, but the Blue Demons had an answer and with 13:09 left in the first half, DePaul made it 13-6 as Jacobs connected on a long ball from straight away.
Just over five minutes later the DePaul lead was up to 22-12 as Weems finished on a layup. However, over the next three minutes UChicago would get hot from three, pushing their team total to seven three pointers over the first 15 minutes of action to pull within two points, 28-26.
The game would not stay close for long though, as down the stretch of the first half the Blue Demons righted the ship, regaining control of the game by outscoring the Maroons 18-5 to go into the break leading 46-31. Through 20 minutes, Moore led all scorers with 15 points while Butz added 10. As a team, DePaul shot .680 (17-25) from the field while holding Chicago to a team percentage of .345 (10-29).
Out of the break it took the Blue Demons just over three minutes to push their advantage up to 21 points as a Weems lay up in transition made it 57-36 DePaul with 16:48 to play. Midway through the second half, DePaul's lead was up to 30 points as Jacobs connected on a catch and shoot three-pointer. From that point on the result was never in question as DePaul pushed its lead to as many as 36 points before working in reserves in the final minutes.
For Chicago, Zach Munson led the Maroons with nine points while Bryce Hopkins added eight points.
The Blue Demons have another quick turnaround returning to action Friday night as Farleigh Dickinson makes the trip to Wintrust Arena for a 7 p.m start. The game can be seen on FS2 while WSCR (670 AM) will be the home of the action on the radio.
