DePaul scores 52 points in second half to pull away from UIC
CHICAGO - Charlie Moore bounced back with 26 points and Paul Reed added a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double as DePaul cruised to an 86-65 victory over UIC on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. Jalen Coleman-Lands also chipped in 11 points.
As a team, DePaul shot .524 (33-63) from the field while finishing with 42 points in the paint and 18 bench points. On the offensive side of the ball, the Blue Demons turned the ball over just 13 times as opposed to 25 times for UIC.
UIC (4-7) took an early 11-8 lead Saturday afternoon as a media timeout stopped action on the floor with 13:34 on the clock. Out of the timeout, Coleman-Lands knocked down a three-pointer, his seventh point of the game and then Moore went through traffic, finishing a layup to put the Blue Demons in front 13-11.
Just past the midway point of the first half, the DePaul lead stood at 17-14 as Romeo Weems found Jaylen Butz for a lay in. With 6:47 on the clock, Reed knocked down a short push shot with his back to the basket, bringing the Blue Demon advantage to seven.
Two and a half minutes later, DePaul took its first double-digit lead of the game at 32-21 as Reed stole the ball, before going coast-to-coast for an old-fashioned three-point play. The opening half ended as Nick Ongenda hit a turnaround jump shot from just outside the paint as the first half buzzer sounded to send the Blue Demons into the intermission with a 34-25 lead.
UIC cut the DePaul lead to six points early in the second half, but DePaul (10-1) would respond. Reed used to a collection of fakes to free himself for a slick fadeaway jump shot from just inside the free throw line. With 15:46 on the clock, Ongenda gathered the ball in transition before slamming the ball home emphatically for two points.
A minute later Reed added another highlight as the big man threw a gorgeous full court bounce pass that found Darious Hall in stride for two points.
At the midway point of the second half, the Blue Demon advantage was up to 16 as Charlie Moore stopped on a dime for a short bank shot.
Over the final 10 minutes DePaul would keep the pressure up, building their lead to as many as 23 points down the stretch as the Blue Demons worked in reserves in the closing minute.
For UIC, Braelen Bridges led the visitors with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Blue Demons return to action on Wednesday as DePaul travels to Cleveland State for a 7 p.m. ET tip. The game can be seen on ESPN3 while on the radio the game can be heard on WIND (560 AM).
