Seven Blue Demons in double figures spark 105-76 win over Alabama State
CHICAGO – It was certainly good to once again be playing ball in Sweet Home, Chicago.
After three consecutive road games over the span of 11 days, No. 16/16 DePaul got back on familiar ground and responded with a 105-76 victory over Alabama State Saturday at Wintrust Arena.
The Blue Demons' seventh win in a row improving their record to 9-1 was their first chance to play to a partisan crowd since a win over Milwaukee nearly three weeks ago.
Deja Church and Marisa Warren paced seven Blue Demons in double figures with 16 points apiece. It was a DePaul career high for Church and an overall career high for Warren who also hd a careerp-high seven assists.
Chante Stonewall's 12 points was matched by Dee Bekelja who also contributed six assists, four steals and three rebounds. Jolene Daninger scored 11 points while Kayla Caudle and Nadège Jean finished with career highs of 10 points each. Caudle added a career-high nine rebounds.
It was the first time this season the Blue Demons had seven players score in double figures.
DePaul went on a 13-0 run not long after the opening tip as Stonewall scored seven in a row. Bekelja's three gave her team a 19-11 lead midway through the first quarter.
Held followed with a three-pointer and Stonewall converted on a three-point play for a 25-11 advantage. Â Free throws by Kiara Dallmann and Bekelja made it 29-11.
Alabama State (3-6) was relying on shots behind the arc but made just two of its first seven. Dallmann's top-of-the-key three helped the Blue Demons take a 40-22 lead after one quarter. Going to his bench liberally, coach Doug Bruno went to 12 players in the first 10 minutes.
The Lady Hornets drew within 15 points in the middle of the second quarter when Church knocked down a three and Warren scored inside in restoring a 53-33 lead.
Staying in attack mode, Caudle scored inside on a nice feed from Warren on a freshman-to-freshman connection. Daninger's swish from behind the arc and a back-to-back Warren three-pointers helped provide a 67-42 halftime lead.
Stonewall had 12 points in the first half and Bekelja had 10. It was 82-54 at the third quarter media timeout as Warren continued her strong play off the bench. Another Daninger three made it 85-54. DePaul went into the fourth quarter leading 87-62.
With a lineup of mostly freshmen throughout the fourth quarter, the Blue Demons built a 94-68 lead at the fourth quarter media timeout. A Jean layup made it 100-74 and the freshman forward followed that with consecutive three-point plays.
Next up is the biggest challenge of the regular season as undefeated No. 2/2 Connecticut comes to Wintrust Arena on Monday for a 7 p.m. tip that will be televised on FS1.

- The 105 points tied for the second-highest point total of the season behind the 109 points against Arkansas State. DePaul had 105 against Notre Dame last Wednesday.
- It was the first time this season the Blue Demons had seven players score in double figures.
- This was the third time Bruno & Co. have reached the century mark in a game.
- The 67 points in the first half is the second most for a half in program history behind only the 69 points DePaul scored against UIC on Jan. 13, 1988.
- The 40-point first quarter was the third-best in program history.
- Warren recorded her first double-digit game with 16 points and career highs in points and assists (seven).

- In the first NCAA RPI reveal last Monday, DePaul was ranked No. 7.
- The Blue Demons need three more wins to reach 900 in program history.
- Campbell needs 71 points to reach the 1,000-point career milestone.
- Campbell is No. 5 in career assists with 533 and Jessica January is fourth with 554.
