Men's Tennis Splits Sunday Action

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The DePaul men's tennis team wrapped up an eventful weekend on Sunday at the FAU Tennis Complex.

The Blue Demons went 1-1 on the day, dropping a 4-3 decision to Stetson before knocking off Tennessee Tech 4-2.

After darkness postponed Saturday evening's matchup against Stetson, the Blue Demons and the Hatters resumed play on Sunday at 9 a.m. Prior to the postponement, DePaul led the match 3-2, but Stetson came away victorious this morning, 4-3.

DePaul clinched the doubles point with Boris Spanjaard and Christopher Casati at No. 1 taking down Louis Gorregues and Tim Gennes 6-3. Vito Tonejc and Fran Tonjec sealed the deal for the Blue Demons at No. 2 with a 6-4 victory over Colin MacNamara and Clement Hamel.

Vito Tonejc recorded DePaul's second point at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gorregues. Blue Demon teammate Christopher Casati gave DePaul the 3-2 advantage before the break with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Antoine Sanchez.

Stetson went on to take the final two matches at No. 5 and No. 6 to claim the win.

Following a 45-minute break, DePaul hit the courts for a matchup with the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech.

In doubles action, Vito and Fran Tonejc continued their winning ways with a 6-4 win at No. 2, while Luuk Wassenaar and Conor O'Meara provided the spark to give DePaul the 1-0 edge with a 6-4 triumph at No. 3.

On the singles side, Casati gave DePaul their second point of the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Fanis Kontopoulos at No. 3. Fran Tonejc took down Wenceslao Albin at No. 4 to give DePaul a 3-2 advantage. Vito Tonejc pulled out a gritty 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Riku Kubota to clinch the match for DePaul.

The Blue Demons (6-4, 2-0) will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 as they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas for the annual HEB Invitational.
