Blue Demons open up on Friday against Louisiana in Corpus Christi
CHICAGO – The Blue Demons will face some stiff competition this weekend as they head down to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in a classic tournament.
The 53rd annual "H-E-B Tournament of Champions" is the longest running college team tournament in America. It was a college team tournament back when the NCAA Championships was only a singles tournament.
The event is hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) at two sites, the Islanders' facility Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center along with the H-E-B Tennis Center.
Along with DePaul, the HEB field includes Louisiana, New Mexico State, Troy, Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), Texas San Antonio (UTSA), Tennessee Tech and the TAMU-CC Islanders. Matches start Friday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The final matches are Saturday at 10 a.m.
Coach Matt Brothers' program is off to a 6-4 start in the dual-match season led by freshman Vito Tonejc with an 8-2 singles record, Boris Spanjaard (5-3) and Christopher Casati (4-3).
In doubles, Colin O'Meara and Luuk Wassenaar have teamed up to go 5-1 in the dual season while Vito and his brother Fran Tonejc are off to a 4-3 start.
DePaul will open up on Friday against Louisiana (11-3), and the Ragin' Cajuns have won five of their last six matches. First serve is at 10 a.m.
The other half of that bracket pairs UTSA (6-1) against UTRGV (2-7). The UTSA Roadrunners come into the HEB with a 6-1 record and have won four in a row. UTRGV has faced some formidable competition with losses to No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 10 Baylor and Alabama.
The two winners will face off at 5 p.m. Friday in the winners bracket while the losers will meet up at the same time in the consolation bracket.
The fifth and seventh-place matches are at 9 a.m. Saturday while the third-place and title matches begin at noon.
