The Blue Demons improve their record to 4-0 after sweeping the first two days of the Total Control Invitational.
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Blue Demons continue the sweep of the Total Control Invitational as they defeat UWGB for the second time this weekend in a 10-1 decision, followed by a narrow 2-1 victory against UMKC.
"One of the biggest things that contributed to these wins is the fact that we don't give up," said head coach Tracie Adix-Zins. "We fight through everything we need to and we are learning as each game is going on. I keep seeing the team make adjustments from game to game.
"I think we have settled in more as each game has gone on but you can definitely see the players are starting to get a little tired. We remind them after every game that we just need to keep the momentum going.
"Today showed a lot about our team. It showed that we are ready to come out, compete and try to win every game that we can."
Game 1 - DePaul 10, UWGB 1
The momentum started instantly for the Blue Demons as they tacked on two runs in the first inning. A double deep into left field from Morgan Greenwood would score Jessica Cothern to put DePaul on the board. Not long after, Kate Polucha singled and reached second on a UWGB error that would score Greenwood to make it 2-0 in DePaul's favor at the end of the first inning.
Both teams would remain quiet until the top of the fourth when Polucha tripled along the right field line. A fielder's choice would get Alysia Rodriguez out at first but would score Polucha to make it 3-0.
Three more DePaul sources would cross home in the inning to put the Blue Demons up 6-0. Brianna Viles reached first on an error by the UWGB first baseman to score Madison Fisher, who was on second as a pinch runner. A single from Maranda Gutierrez would find two DePaul runners on base and a Scalzitti single paired with a UWGB fault would score Viles and Gutierrez.
With an uneventful fifth inning, Gutierrez opened up the sixth with a bang as she launched her fifth career homer and the team's first of the season. Scalzitti, Cothern and Morgan Greenwood would score DePaul's final three runs of the game in the top of the sixth.
With one last chance to capitalize on, UWGB scored their lone run of the game but it would end in DePaul's favor.
Game 2 - DePaul 2, UMKC 1
DePaul once again got the offense going instantly as Gutierrez doubled deep into the left side to then be brought home on a Greenwood single to make it 1-0 after the first inning.
The action remained slim until the fifth inning where Erin Andris was walked and ended up stealing home after Gutierrez reached first on an error.
UMKC would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
