
Blue Demons Head to BIG EAST Tennis Championship

No. 4 seed DePaul faces No. 5 Creighton in Friday's quarterfinals
CHICAGO – No. 4 seed DePaul begins its quest for a BIG EAST title on Friday at the Cayce (S.C) Fitness & Tennis Center.
The Blue Demons will open against No. 5 seed Creighton (9-9, 1-2 in the BIG EAST) in the 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal. Saturday's semifinals will begin at 8 a.m. and Sunday's 8 a.m. championship match will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network with John Fanta on the call. The BIG EAST Network can be accessed at foxsportsgo.com.
Sunday's winner will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. Last year, DePaul advanced to the title match before coming up short against Marquette.
DePaul enters the postseason with a 4-3 record against conference opponents and 8-11 overall for the dual-match season. Coach Matt Brothers' team topped the Bluejays 4-3 on Feb. 1 at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
In other BIG EAST competition, the Blue Demons defeated Georgetown 6-1, Xavier 5-2 and Villanova 6-1 while falling to No. 1 seed St. John's 4-1, No. 2 Butler 4-3 and No. 3 Marquette 5-2.
Freshman Vito Tonejc leads DePaul into the BIG EAST Championship with a sparkling 15-5 record in the dual season. Since ascending to the No. 1 singles position, the tennis standout from Croatia and two-time BIG EAST Athlete of the Week has gone 10-3. He is 5-1 versus league opponents.
Christopher Casati has a 10-8 singles mark in the dual season and went 4-2 against BIG EAST opponents. Luuk Wassenaar duplicated Casati's record in conference matches.
In doubles play, Connor O'Meara and Wassenaar have racked up a 13-5 record including a 6-1 record against BIG EAST doubles teams. Fran and Vito Tonejc are 4-2 in conference doubles matches.
St. John's (16-5, 4-0) comes to South Carolina as the early favorite and will face No. 8 seed Xavier in the quarterfinals. No. 2 Butler (20-6, 4-1) opens against No. 7 Villanova and defending champion No. 3 seed Marquette (13-8, 5-2) draws No. 6 Georgetown.
