CHICAGO - The DePaul women's soccer team fought a hard battle against Horizon League Champions Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon, but ultimately dropped their regular season opener, 2-1, at Wish Field.
The Blue Demons (0-1-0) outnumbered the Panthers (1-0-0) in corner kicks - nine to four - and shots, placing 12 of the 20 on goal, forcing Milwaukee keeper Allie Strottman to make 11 saves. Freshman Kristin Boos set a base for her career high with seven shots and three on goal. She was backed by Brooke Weitzel with four shots and Mary Tierney with three. Jessica Lazo and Jade Eriksen-Russo added two shots apiece.
DePaul stayed strong defensively through the first half. The back line anchored by Avery Hay, Gwen Walker, Jessica Lazo and Sydney parker only allowed one shot within the first 45 minutes.
The offense picked up in the second half, but not before Milwaukee would gain a quick 2-0 lead. Haley Johnson would score off a ball from Julia Barajas in the 51st minute and Gaby Schwartz notched a penalty goal in the 60th minute.
Just two minutes later, the Blue Demons earned a free kick that Jessica Lazo took about 60 yards out that deflected right over the hands of Strottman and into the back of the net to cut the Panthers' lead to one.
DePaul would continue firing but despite five shots within the last 10 minutes of the match, the Milwaukee defense wouldn't let up and time would run out. Milwaukee now holds a 5-3-0 advantage in the all-time series.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
SMU welcomes five and returns seven starters from last season. SERIES STUFF

DePaul's 2018 All-BIG EAST Preseason senior forward Franny Cerny and senior midfielder Madeline Frick had multiple chances to find the back of the net — both with three shots — but were unsuccessful. Frick scored the lone goal for the Blue Demons in the 86thminute to cut SMU's lead to one.
