Hard-Fought Third Set Not Enough to Overcome Northwestern
9/21/2019 9:41:00 PM | WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons put up a fight in the third set but ended up falling 0-3 (12-25, 16-25, 19-25) against Northwestern to cap of Chicago Cup play. DePaul's record drops to 8-4 on the season.Â
FROM COACH ZIDEK
"We knew this weekend was going to be one of the toughest of our preseason so far just because they are very good teams and rivalries, so the question is how do we get back from this," said head coach Marie Zidek. "There were a lot of good things that came out of the weekend and a lot of things that we can go back to the drawing board and work on.
"When you have a little bit of regret after competing, you want to play a match, not have a week of practice. So the silver lining is we get another opportunity to play on Wednesday and we get Xavier at home."
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » It was a back and forth battle up until a 4-4 knot, however, three-consecutive service aces from Northwestern's Temi Thomas-Ailara lifted NU up 7-4, forcing a DePaul timeout. The Wildcats would go on to have double DePaul's score at 16-8 and would hold a wide lead, taking the first set 25-12.
SET TWO » The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead that eventually grew to 6-1. The Blue Demons managed to tack on a few more points but sat in a ten-point deficit at 7-17, calling a timeout. NU held a distant lead and regardless of back-to-back service aces from Ella Siddall, took the second set 25-16.
SET THREE » The teams were neck-in-neck up until a 9-9 knot. The next three points went to Northwestern and its lead eventually grew to 16-12, urging a DePaul timeout. Out of the stoppage, kills from Emma Price and Brittany Maxwell brought DePaul within two. After a kill from Avarie Evans-Allen and a handful of NU attack errors, the Blue Demons would only be down by one at 18-19. DePaul would score one last point on a Wildcat service error but would drop the final set 19-25.Â
