Sibling duo of senior Henry Harper and newcomer Violet Harper lead respective races
MADISON, WIS. — DePaul men's and women's cross country return to Chicago after an evening of competitive racing at the 2019 Badger Invite. Leading the women's squad in the 6K race was freshman Violet Harper with her brother, senior Henry Harper, leading the men's pack in the 8K.
Â
"Our men ran a competitive race today, our strategy was to race as a pack and finish close to each other," said associate head coach Derrick Peterson. "Henry and Ryan raced really well up-front for us."
Â
Henry Harper clocked in a time of 26:04.0 in the 8K race held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. He was followed immediately behind by sophomore Ryan Taylor who clocked in a 26:05.5 time to place sixth overall. The duo edged out Wisconsin's Austin Rendon who trailed two seconds behind.
Â
"Freshman Ryan Bonfiglio ran a great, smart race for the team and worked his way up throughout the race to finish as our number three," said Peterson. "He did a great job of bringing sophomores Dominic Bruce and Michael Parry with him through the finish line."
Â
Ryan Bonfiglio's 26:08.8 time in the race placed the La Grange native eighth overall and third among his squad. Marking a great finish was transfer sophomore Michael Parry who crossed the line at the 26:14.4 mark and was followed by teammate Bruce with a 26:26.3 finish.
Â
On the women's side, Violet Harper led the Blue Demon pack in her collegiate 6K debut with a time of 23:26.3. Also competing in her first Division I 6K, Alexa Havon placed 11th overall and second among the DePaul squad clocking a 23:53.0 time at the finish line.
Â
"The women raced a very talented Wisconsin team. We were led by two of our talented freshmen and are still learning who we are as a team with these past two meets with the goal to have a strong presence by the championship portion of our season," Peterson added.
Â
Rounding out the scoring times for the women's squad was senior Jessica Harris (24:00.5), junior Margaret Hastings (24:02.5) and Maret Elgren (24:11.1).
