DePaul Takes Down Bradley in Four Sets

PEORIA, Ill. - DePaul's record improves to 5-1 after topping tournament host Bradley 3-1 (25-23, 25-12, 20-25, 25-21) Saturday afternoon to conclude CEFCU Invitational play. Donna Brown and Isabelle Banez were named to the CEFCU Invitational All-Tournament Team.

"Another great team effort needed to beat a tough Bradley team," said head coach Marie Zidek. "The greatest thing about this group is that anyone can step up any time when it is needed. Our depth continues to allow us to go deep within matches and put us in a position to win.
"Donna and Belle had monster matches and I have to give a tilt of the cap to Katie's serving in a tight fourth set that gave us the momentum to finish it out. She had a really amazing week in practice from a leadership standpoint and it absolutely carried over into this match and was a big factor in us getting the win."
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » Bailey Nelson struck the first kill of the match. The score remained close until DePaul escaped into a 10-6 lead on a 3-0 run courtesy of an Avarie Evans-Allen kill and two Bradley attack errors. With DePaul leading 12-9, Bradley called the first timeout and the Blue Demons held the lead until the Braves knotted the score at 18-18, forcing DePaul to call its first timeout. Points exchanged until DePaul went on a 3-0 run on kills from Brittany Maxwell, Elana Brueggemann and Evans-Allen to take a 21-19 lead and bring about another Braves timeout. Bradley would catch up again at 23-23 but an attack error would give DePaul the first set 25-23.
SET TWO » The Blue Demons jumped out to a 8-1 lead on four Maxwell kills, three BU errors and a Katie Dolan service ace, forcing an early Bradley timeout. Maxwell would strike another kill out of the stoppage and Bradley would gain its second point, but a Donna Brown kill, Maxwell service ace and a Braves error would be the only action before another Bradley timeout was called. The Braves went on a 3-0 run out of the break to cut their deficit in half at 6-12. The Blue Demons continued to distance themselves and eventually led by a set-high 11 points at 19-8. A Bradley attack error would give DePaul the second set 25-12.
SET THREE » The score remained close until Bradley went on a 3-0 run to lead 11-7, forcing DePaul's first timeout. The Blue Demons slipped into a larger deficit and took another timeout being down 8-16. A 4-0 run later on would begin to close in on the deficit thanks to two kills from Maxwell along with Elana Brueggemann and Brown kills, causing Bradley to call a timeout. DePaul would knot the score 20-20 on a Bradley error but a 5-0 run would give Bradley its first set 25-20.
SET FOUR » Bradley jumped into a 5-0 lead, forcing an early DePaul timeout. With DePaul eventually falling into a 1-7 deficit, the Blue Demons went on a 4-0 run courtesy of a Maxwell kill, back-to-back service aces from Dolan and a BU error to close in. Another run capped off by a BU attack error would give DePaul its first lead of the set at 13-12. The Blue Demons' lead would only grow from there, eventually ahead by a difference of 18-13 at another Bradley stoppage.

The Blue Demons host the DePaul Invitational where they will face Central Michigan Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. CT and compete in two Saturday contests against Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. CT and Valparaiso at 8 p.m. CT.
