Five Starters in Double Figures Key 85-68 win over Seton Hall
CHICAGO – Life in the BIG EAST for No. 15/17 DePaul means confronting your opponent's "A" game just about each and every night.
On Friday night, Seton Hall gave the Blue Demons its best shot but it wasn't enough as the lone unbeaten team in the BIG EAST kept its record clean after an 85-68 victory for its fifth in a row.
All five DePaul starters finished in double figures led by Lexi Held's 21 points and a career-high six steals. Sonya Morris tallied 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while Chante Stonewall had 16 points and six rebounds.
Kelly Campbell came away with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds while handing out five assists and Deja Church added 13 points and six boards.
Eight quick points including a pair of threes by Held staked DePaul (14-2, 4-0) to a 60-48 lead in the third quarter. Seton Hall had crept back within five when Church and Campbell made it 66-57. Stonewall's two foul shots sent her team into the fourth quarter with a 68-59 lead.
The Blue Demons scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter for a 76-59 lead at the media timeout. Held hit a pair of baskets, Campbell a three and Church a foul shot.
Seton Hall (10-6, 3-2) scored six straight and it was 76-66 with 4:16 left in the game. A 9-0 run put it away with Held, Campbell and Morris doing the honors for an 85-66 lead.
Seton Hall came out strong from the opening tip and shot its way to an 18-10 lead at the first quarter media timeout. It was up and down the court at a fast pace as two of the BIG EAST's top offensive teams took turns attacking the basket.
Led by Stonewall, DePaul closed out the first quarter on a 9-2 run and it was tied 22-22 going into the second quarter. Stonewall had 10 points in the first 10 minutes.
The Blue Demons opened the second quarter with a 16-5 run as Church hit a pair of threes and Held scored seven in leading their team to a 38-27 lead. The Pirates responded with six points in a row to come within five.
Morris scored five consecutive points down the second quarter stretch and it was 46-41 at halftime. Held had 12 points in the first 20 minutes and Stonewall had 10. Morris added nine points while Church had eight points and five rebounds.
DePaul connected on five shots from deep in the first half and was shooting 41.2 percent from behind the arc at halftime.
