Late rally comes up short in 74-67 loss on Saturday
NEW YORK – A late rally came up short as DePaul dropped a 74-67 game at St. John's on Saturday. Charlie Moore nearly pulled off the first triple-double in program history with 14 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds while Jaylen Butz scored 17 points with nine rebounds.
The Blue Demons jumped ahead 13-7 behind six early points from Moore and five from Butz. St. John's answered six in-a-row to tie the score at 13-13.
DePaul (12-4, 0-3 BIG EAST) went ahead 24-20 on a bucket from Butz before 10 straight points by the Red Storm that gave them a 30-24 lead with just over four minutes left until halftime. St. John's maintained the lead and took a 39-34 lead at intermission.
The Red Storm led by 11 early in the second half, but the Blue Demons didn't go away as back-to-back dunks from Butz and Darious Hall off assists from Moore pulled DePaul to within six points with just under 12 minutes left in the game.
St. John's (12-5, 1-3 BIG EAST) rebuilt its lead back to 12 points at the six-minute mark before DePaul made a final run. The Blue Demons held St. John's scoreless for nearly five minutes and cut the deficit to 71-67 on a free throw by Jalen Coleman-Lands with 41 seconds left, but that would be as close as they would get as St. John's knocked down three free throws for the 74-67 final.
Coleman-Lands scored 15 points. Darious Hall recorded his first double figure game in a DePaul uniform with 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. Paul Reed grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds with four points.
Rasheem Dunn led St. John's with 19 points while Mustapha Heron scored 15 points.
The Blue Demons continue the two-game road trip with a Tuesday night contest at Villanova. Start time at Finneran Pavilion is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM).
