Chicago native eligible immediately for 2019-20 season
CHICAGO – DePaul head coach Dave Leitao announced today that Chicago native D.J. Williams has joined the men's basketball program as a graduate transfer. Williams played two seasons at Illinois (2015-17) and one season at George Washington (2018-19). He is immediately eligible to compete for the remainder of the 2019-20 season.
"D.J. brings immediate depth for us and to add a player like him to our roster provides another dimension for us," said Leitao. "His length and athleticism along with his experience of playing in the Big Ten and Atlantic 10 Conferences will help us not only each game on our schedule, but every day in practice."
Williams led George Washington with a scoring average of 13.7 points per game in 2018-19 while playing in 31 of 33 games with 31 starts. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 33.5 minutes per game while shooting .401 (158-394) from the field. Williams posted 21 games in double figures that included a career-high 30 points against Fordham among five games of at least 20 points.
At Illinois, he played in 46 games over his freshman and sophomore seasons. He averaged 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds while in Champaign.
A consensus national top-100 recruit out of Chicago's Simeon High School, Williams was a second team All-State selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He was ranked No. 78 on the recruiting services consensus index that included a No. 46 ranking nationally by Scout, No. 64 by ESPN and No. 91 by 247Sports.
DePaul opens a three-game homestand on Saturday when fifth-ranked Butler visits Wintrust Arena. Start time is Noon between the Blue Demons and Bulldogs. The homestand continues on Wednesday night against Creighton before St. John's makes the trip to Chicago on Saturday, Jan. 25.
