Six in double figures lead Blue Demons past Georgetown 92-66
CHICAGO – It is rare for a team to go unbeaten through an entire BIG EAST season.
Even going unscathed at the midpoint of the conference season is quite uncommon. After Sunday's 92-66 victory over Georgetown, No. 11/12 DePaul is 9-0 at the halfway point and 19-2 overall with a tough second half of the schedule coming up.
Combining to lead the Blue Demons to their 10th win in a row were six players in double figures led by Lexi Held with 19. Kelly Campbell put up a complete stat line with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Dee Bekelja added 13 points off the bench, Deja Church contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, Chante Stonewall finished with 11 points and a game-high eight boards and Sonya Morris added 10 points.
DePaul jumped out to a 14-7 lead at the first quarter media timeout and were pressuring full-court right from the opening tip. Church had seven points and Held five in the first four minutes of play.
Held, Stonewall and Campbell ignited a 14-6 burst in building a 28-13 advantage. The margin was 32-15 after the first quarter as the home team connected on six of its first 14 from three-point range.
A pair of Stonewall baskets including a pretty turnaround jumper increased the margin to 36-17 at the second quarter media timeout. The Blue Demons took their first 20-point lead after a Morris three made it 39-19 in the middle of the quarter.
Three-pointers from Held, Campbell and Church along with a pair of Stonewall foul shots bumped the advantage to 50-27 at halftime.
By then, Stonewall had 11 points and six rebounds and Held had 11. Church put up 10 points and five rebounds and Campbell already had nine points, six assists and five boards. DePaul shot nearly 42 percent (10-of-24) from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Three-pointers from Held, Campbell and Morris padded the lead to 59-31 three minutes into the third quarter. At that point DePaul was 13-of-29 from deep. Held's reverse layup made it a 30-point game at 61-31.
A pair of Church free throws and another Campbell basket provided a 65-34 lead at the third quarter media timeout. With less than four minutes to go in the third quarter, coach Doug Bruno subbed out his entire starting five with his team ahead 68-38.
Nadège Jean and Bekelja sparked the reserves as DePaul went into the fourth quarter with an 80-50 lead.
The Blue Demons are back in action Friday with a BIG EAST showdown against dangerous Creighton. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Wintrust Arena.
