Friday game on ESPN replaces originally scheduled matchup at Villanova
CHICAGO – In this totally unpredictable world of pandemic basketball, schedules are subject to change at any moment.
No. 20/19 DePaul has postponed its scheduled game Friday at Villanova and will instead play No. 5/5 Louisville in the prestigious Women's Jimmy V Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The showdown of national powers will be televised at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN.
DePaul also announced that it has canceled the Dec. 9 game at Kent State.
Louisville and DePaul have a longtime rivalry and shared history dating back to their days competing in Conference USA.
In making the announcement, ESPN released this statement.
"ESPN Events has added DePaul to the Women's Jimmy V Classic Presented by Corona Extra. The No. 20 Blue Demons will face No. 5 Louisville on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. DePaul replaces No. 3 UConn, who withdrew due to health protocols.
"The Women's Jimmy V Classic will now also feature No. 8 NC State at No. 1 South Carolina on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
"Named for legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano, the Jimmy V Classic annually raises money and awareness for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The women's classic debuted in 2002."
The Jimmy V Classic is part of Bubbleville College Basketball, an 11-day, 46-game event featuring men's and women's game at Mohegan Sun, produced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Gazelle Group.
Bubbleville is home to several events relocated due to COVID-19 and provides a controlled environment with teams and event staff adhering to tribal, government and NCAA health and safety protocols and testing requirements.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Gazelle Group have collaborated to produce the multiple games Nov. 25 through Dec. 5 and have named the space "Bubbleville."
Bubbleville will house several events relocated and reimagined due to COVID-19, such as the Tip-Off Tournament, Women's Classic, Empire Classic and Legends Classic.
"We want to thank and acknowledge the cooperation from the BIG EAST and Villanova allowing us to adjust our schedule at the 11th hour," said DePaul coach Doug Bruno. "DePaul has a long history playing Louisville in Conference USA, winning some games and losing some.
"Actually, they had four nonconference games lost to COVID-19, and I was working with their coach Jeff Walz to fit them into our schedule if an opening developed.
"We try to play one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the country every year, and this is a great opportunity for our players to face one of the nation's best."
