Blue Demons struggle from the field throughout the game
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – DePaul struggled from the field throughout the night and lost, 60-42, at Butler on Saturday. The Blue Demons scored a season-low 42 points while Charlie Moore and Nick Ongenda led the team with eight points apiece.
After Moore scored the first two points of the game, Butler reeled off 13 straight over five minutes before Darious Hall scored with 14:18 left to end the run for the Bulldogs.
With the Blue Demons trailing by 11, Moore and Ongenda combined for six straight points and two free throws by Moore pulled DePaul (14-15, 2-14 BIG EAST) to within five at 21-16 with just over six minutes left until halftime. After a bucket for Butler, Oscar Lopez Jr. scored and Hall converted a baseline drive into a dunk and the deficit dropped to three points with 2:45 on the clock.
The first half concluded with six straight points for Butler before two free throws by Jalen Coleman-Lands ended the half with Butler holding a 29-22 lead.
Following the break, the second half started even over the first five minutes before Butler's Jordan Tucker opened up the game with four three-pointers in the second half. The first was part of a four-point play to give the Bulldogs a 37-26 lead before three straight three's around the eight-minute mark put the game out of reach as Butler (20-9, 8-8 BIG EAST) held a 53-32 lead with 6:11 left in the game.
Moore added three rebounds and two steals while Ongenda grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots. Romeo Weems scored seven points and Coleman-Lands added six as DePaul went 18-for-54 (.333) from the field overall and 1-of-12 (.083) from three-point range.
Tucker and Sean McDermott each scored 13 points to lead Butler.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Tuesday night to face Marquette in the home finale of the regular season. Start time is 7 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM).
