Blue Demons closed late after struggling from the field early in the game
CHICAGO - Paul Reed led the Blue Demons with 18 points and nine rebounds, but a late comeback came up short as DePaul fell to Xavier, 67-59, Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena. Rounding out the DePaul scorers in double figures, Jalen Coleman-Lands finished with 17 points on five three-pointers while Charlie Moore chipped in with 10 points and eight assists.
DePaul (13-10, 1-9 BIG EAST) finished 23-of-67 (.343) from the field while knocking down eight three pointers on 26 attempts (.308). The charity stripe proved the difference as the visitors finished with 17 free throws versus five for the host.
Moore and Coleman-Lands knocked down early long balls as the Blue Demons jumped out to a 6-3 lead less than two minutes into the action. However, Xavier would respond, and with 14:45 on the clock a 13-0 run gave the Musketeers a 16-6 edge going into a DePaul time out.
With 8:23 to play in the first half, Reed scored his fourth point in a 15-second stretch, going coast to coast off a steal for a reverse slam to pull the host within 13. The Blue Demons would not get any closer over the opening 20 minutes, as down the stretch of the first half, the Musketeers extended their lead once more to head into the intermission in front, 35-16.
Out of the break, Jaylen Butz would get DePaul on the second half scoreboard less then 30 seconds into play as he backed his smaller defender into the paint for two points. Then, with 18:31 on the clock, a Coleman-Lands three cut the deficit to 14 points at 35-21.
Less than a minute later, it was Coleman-Lands knocking down another long ball, as the sharpshooter extended the Blue Demon run to 8-0 and pulling DePaul within 11 points.
However, over the next seven minutes the visitors would regain their control over the game, as the Xavier lead stood at 18, 47-29 midway through the second half.
Down the stretch DePaul would make one last push as back-to-back buckets from Reed pulled DePaul within 10 at 57-47 with 2:24 to play. On the next possession, Moore found Coleman-Lands in the corner for a three, and then the Blue Demons stole the inbound pass, leading to a Reed dunk that pulled DePaul within seven with 1:51 on the clock.
However, in the final minute the comeback fell short, as DePaul could not get closer than six points as Xavier held on for the win.
For the Musketeers (15-8, 4-6 BIG EAST), Paul Scruggs led the visitors with 13 points while Tyrique Jones added a 12 points to his game-high 18 rebounds.
