Blue Demons one of eight teams competing at Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play
CHICAGO – The DePaul golf team opens the Spring half of the 2019-20 on Monday at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play in Dade City, Fla. Ball State is the host of the eight-team event that takes place on Monday and Tuesday with two matches on Monday and a single match on Tuesday.
DePaul opens the event against Ball State and faces either Eastern Michigan or Loyola-Chicago in the second match. The other half of the bracket features Dayton against Xavier and Bowling Green against Drake.
The six-player Blue Demon lineup for the Yestingsmeier Mach Play includes Campbell Wolf, Nik Gatmaytan, Noah Kolar, Stephen Sul, Perry Chong and Conor Glennon.
The first round of matches are set for an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start on Monday at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The Lake Jovita South Course features a par 72 layout over 7,153 yards.
Wolf Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week: Coming off the best finish of his collegiate career, DePaul sophomore Campbell Wolf was named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on Sept. 26 by the league office. Wolf finished in a tie for third at the NKU Fall Classic with the lowest tournament score of his career.
Wolf posted rounds of 72 (+1), 67 (-4) and 73 (+2) to finish at 212 (-1). The 67 in the second round matched the best round of his collegiate career while the third place finish marked his second top 25 showing in two events this season.
The weekly honor is the first for Wolf and the first by a DePaul golfer since Charlie Spencer-White last season in March 2019.
Gatmaytan Goes Low: In the third round of the Crusader Collegiate, junior Nik Gatmaytan turned in the best round of his career with a sizzling six-under score of 66 to finish in a tie for sixth place. His round was the lowest by a DePaul golfer since the 2004-05 season.
Gatmaytan's circuit was bogey-free at Sand Creek CC with six birdies. After starting the day in a tie for 21st place, he moved up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth for the best finish of his collegiate career. Gatmaytan finished the tournament with a score of 213 (-3).
His round of 66 was the best round by a Blue Demon since Matt McMahon's record of 63 (-7) at the The Tillinghast at Fenway GC in Scarsdale, N.Y. in October 2004.
Fall Recap: Crusader Collegiate (Sept. 16-17) – Nik Gatmaytan finished in a tie for sixth that included a 66 (-6) in the third round... the 66 was the lowest score in a round by a DePaul golfer in 15 years... the team placed sixth out of 15 teams... Noah Kolar (t16th), Stephen Sul (t25th) and Campbell Wolf (t25th) each finished in the top 25. NKU Fall Classic (Sept. 23-24) – Campbell Wolf recorded the best finish of his collegiate career in a tie for third with a score of 212 (-1)... Nik Gatmaytan also finished in a tie for 16th place with a 219 (+6)... the Blue Demons finished in a tie for second out of 12 teams. Georgetown Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15) – Stephen Sul (222, +9) was the top finisher for the Blue Demons in a tie for 27th place while the team finished 12th... Nik Gatmaytan (223, +10) followed Sul in a tie for 32nd while Noah Kolar (230, +17) finished in a group in 53rd place. Musketeer Classic (Oct 21-22) – Noah Kolar led the Blue Demons in a tie for eighth... the freshman started the third round in a tie for 23rd before firing a one-under score of 70... he posted a 54-hole total of 215 (+2) to finish in a four-way tie for eighth place... the Blue Demons' score of 903 (+51) put them in 12th place. Chi-Town Showdown (Oct. 28) – DePaul concluded the first half of the season with a 13-11 loss against Loyola-Chicago in the third edition of the Chi-Town Showdown... Noah Kolar posted two match play wins while Conor Glennon and Stephen Sul each claimed victories.
Looking Ahead: Following the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, the Blue Demons continue the spring schedule on Feb. 22-24 at the Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate. The three-day, three-round event takes place in Goodyear, Ariz. at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
Dallio Memorial Returns: An event in the memory of former DePaul golfer John Dallio returns to the schedule as DePaul hosts the John Dallio Match Play on April 10. The four-team event will be played at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont as the program hosted a fall tournament in Dallio's name through the 2016-17 season.
