No. 16/15 DePaul Falls 90-83 at Marquette on Sunday
MILWAUKEE – This was BIG EAST regular-season champion DePaul's final tune-up before next week's conference tournament at Wintrust Arena.
Despite a magnificent 31-point fourth quarter, No. 16/15 DePaul could not overcome a 22-point, fourth quarter deficit in a 90-83 loss Sunday at Marquette.
Lexi Held led DePaul with 25 points and Kelly Campbell hit five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Deja Church had 14 points and eight rebounds, Chante Stonewall 12 points and seven boards and Sonya Morris 11 points.
The Blue Demons (25-5, 15-3) were faced with overcoming a 16-point deficit as the third quarter unfolded. Marquette scored the first five points to move in front 55-34. DePaul began whittling the deficit with a Held free throw, Campbell three-pointer and Church layup making it 61-44 at the third quarter media timeout.
The Blue Demons made just four of its first 17 attempts from behind the arc and was shooting 32.7 percent overall at that point.
It was 63-44 when Held and Stonewall combined on four foul shots and Church scored inside in reducing the deficit to 63-50 and prompting Marquette coach Megan Duffy to call timeout with 1:05 left in the third quarter. Marquette star Selena Lott was on the bench with four fouls.
Church scored again out of the timeout and DePaul trailed by 11. Wouldn't you know it---another buzzer-beating three---this one by Jordan King and the Golden Eagles led 66-52 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The home team opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run with the last three baskets generated by offensive rebounds in opening up a 76-54 lead as DePaul coach Doug Bruno called timeout. At that point, the Blue Demons were being outrebounded 51-23 and Marquette had 22 offensive boards.
Back-to-back threes from Stonewall and Campbell cut the lead to 78-65 with 5:33 left. A Dee Bekelja three followed by consecutive Held baskets cut it to 82-72 with 3:23 left. Campbell hit another triple and it was a seven-point game.
A Held three made it 83-78 but that was as close as the rally would get.
Marquette (22-7, 13-5) came out hot from the opening tip hitting seven of its first 11 shots that propelled the Golden Eagles to an early 13-2 run and a 15-4 lead. DePaul coach Doug Bruno called a timeout as the Al McGuire Center crowd was roaring.
The Blue Demons came alive and outscored Marquette 16-12 the rest of the first quarter to draw within 27-20. Held had eight points in the quarter and Morris back-to-back threes.
DePaul began to match the intensity the Golden Eagles came with from the opening tip as the second quarter opened. An early 8-2 burst brought the Blue Demons within 29-28 on a Morris free throw after Held had hit a three-pointer followed by a smooth sleight-of-hand move inside for a layup.
Marquette answered with the next five points to stay in front 34-28 at the second quarter media timeout. Held already had 13 points in 11 minutes of playing time.
A pair of Held free throws and Kiara Dallmann's layup on a pretty feed from Held cut the deficit to 37-32. That's when the Golden Eagles mounted a 13-2 run to close out the second quarter, climaxing in a Selena Lott buzzer-beating three-pointer from 30 feet for a 50-34 halftime lead.
Marquette shot 50 percent in the first two quarters to DePaul's 31.6 percent and also outrebounded the Blue Demons 32-15. Held had 15 points at the break while Lott led the home team with 16.
DePaul is back in action Saturday in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament at Wintrust Arena. That game will tip at noon.

- Since BIG EAST realignment (2013-14), Bruno's program is tops among all men's and women's teams with a 106-20 record in conference play. The Villanova men's team is second.
