DePaul spots Indiana a 2-0 lead before roaring back for a 4-2 triumph
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On a pleasant Sunday morning, DePaul women's tennis turned this Indiana campus town into "Comeback City."
In the same locale where the 1979 Academy Award winning movie "Breaking Away" (Best Original Screenplay) was filmed about local high school graduates known as "cutters" who form a bicycle racing team that wins the famed Indiana University "Little 500" race, the Blue Demons overcame the odds in a 4-2 victory over the Hoosiers.
Indiana (9-6) took an early 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point and claiming the singles point at the No. 5 position.
Undaunted, Alina Kuzmenkova began the rally with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Annabelle Andrinopou at No. 2. The very next match, Hristina Djokic tied the match 2-2 after defeating Xiaowei "Rose" Hu 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
Yuliya Kizelbasheva made it three in a row for coach Marisa Arce's team with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision over Alexandra Staiculesc at No. 3 singles.
All that was left was the clincher. No. 1 singles player Aspasia Avgeri did the honors, persevering over Caitlin Bernard 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to give the Blue Demons four singles wins in a row and improve their dual-match season record to 6-7.
After breaking away from Bloomington with an inspiring comeback win, coach Marisa Arce and her team will take a break and recharge themselves for the final stretch of the season. DePaul returns to action on March 22 with a spring break match against Central Arkansas in Lake Nona, Fla.
