Senior point guard No. 1 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio
CHICAGO – There is no question Kelly Campbell is the most efficient point guard in the country.
Validation came on Friday when the NCAA proclaimed Campbell the 2019-20 NCAA Division I statistical champion for assist/turnover ratio.
It's a rare accomplishment indeed to lead the nation in a statistical category, and Campbell's steadfast consistency placed her at the top for much of the season.
The 5-foot, 10-inch senior was the team linchpin who synchronized an offense that was No. 2 in the country in scoring at 85 points a game---trailing only NCAA juggernaut Oregon (86 points) that is projected to have four players taken in Friday night's WNBA Draft including No. 1 Sabrina Ionescu and No. 2 Satou Sabally.
Along with leading the nation in assist-turnover ratio, Campbell finished No. 4 in assists and No. in three-point percentage. The All-BIG EAST backcourt standout averaged nearly nine points a game and led the team in rebounds (8.1 per game), assists (6.1 per game) and three-point percentage (.460) which also topped the BIG EAST.
She teamed with fellow senior and honorable mention All-American Chante Stonewall in driving DePaul (28-5) to its 18th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance along with the Blue Demons' sixth BIG EAST regular-season title in the last seven years and a three-peat BIG EAST tournament crown.
Campbell made her presence felt all over the court and throughout the box score. The all-purpose guard posted the second triple-double of her career on Super Bowl Sunday with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists against Providence.
She came so close to two more triple-doubles this season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists against Notre Dame and nine points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists against Butler.
This unflappable orchestrator of the high-powered attack was honored with the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award and selected to the Athletic Directors Association Division I-AAA national Scholar-Athlete Team along with Stonewall.
The two-time Nancy Lieberman Award Top 10 finalist (top point guards in the nation) was also a Citizen Naismith Trophy nominee and a Senior CLASS Award nominee.
She scored her 1,000th career point on Jan. 19 at Butler and finished fourth all-time in career assists with 672 and seventh all-time in career rebounds with 978.
If not for the NCAA canceling the season because of COVID-19, Campbell was within range of becoming only the sixth women's basketball player in DePaul history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
