CHICAGO – DePaul head coach Dave Leitao announced today that Ray Salnave is joining the program as a graduate transfer. Salnave completed his undergraduate coursework at Monmouth and will be immediately eligible for the 2020-21 season with the Blue Demons.
"DePaul has a great history of guards from New York City and we're excited to add another one in Ray Salnave," said Leitao. "He'll provide instant experience and toughness after playing three seasons at Monmouth. In addition to his outstanding college credentials, he also played at one of New York's great high school programs at Cardozo where he competed against the best in the city every day. He'll feel right at home whenever we are in the New York area and at Madison Square Garden."
In 95 career games over three seasons with the Hawks, Salnave averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 rebound and 2.6 assists per game while going 348-440 (.791) at the free throw line.
The 6-3 guard earned second team All-MAAC and NABC All-District honors last season after averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 31 games. He was ranked among the top 10 in the MAAC in scoring, assists, steals and free throw percentage. Salnave totaled 26 games in double figures including a career-high 34 points against Fairfield.
He led Monmouth in scoring in 2018-19 with 11.9 points per game and totaled a team-high 95 assists. Salnave played in 34 games with 19 games in double figures that saw him score a season-high 25 at Albany. In his first active collegiate season, the Elmont, N.Y., native averaged 9.8 points per game that included a scoring average of 11.1 in conference play. He recorded his first career 20-point game with 21 points against Saint Peter's and finished the season with 12 games of at least 10 points.
As a graduate transfer, Salnave is eligible to play immediately next season. He joins a newcomer class that includes incoming freshman Kobe Elvis along with transfers Javon Freeman-Liberty and Courvoisier McCauley.
Freeman-Liberty played his first two seasons at Valparaiso and totaled 992 points with the Crusaders collecting numerous honors as both a freshman and sophomore. Over his two seasons with the Crusaders, he averaged 15.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game in 66 games. McCauley was among the nation's top players last season at Lincoln Memorial as he earned NABC Division II All-American honors and was on the Bevo Francis Top 25 Watch List for the national player of the year. In 62 career games with the Railsplitters, McCauley totaled 946 points for a two-season average of 15.3 points per game. He knocked down 161 three-pointers while shooting .412 from behind the arc and averaged 5.1 rebounds per game.
Elvis signed with DePaul in November and is ranked among Canada's top players. He averaged 26.5 points per game for Bill Crothers Prep last season and was named to the First Team All-Stars for the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association.
