Blue Demons hit a season-best .354 in the victory to move to 3-3 in BIG EAST play
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A well-balanced attack powered DePaul past Providence 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Set scores of the match were 25-16, 25-19, 25-21.
The victory snapped a three-match skid for the Blue Demons as DePaul improved to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in BIG EAST play.
DePaul hit a season-best .354 behind three Blue Demons with nine or more kills. Sophomore's Jill Pressly and Hanna Karl led the way with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Pressly chipped in four service aces while Karl hit .667 with 18 errorless swings.
Donna Brown terminated nine balls at a .533 clip to go along with a service ace and a pair of blocks.
Setters Molly Murrihy and Ashley Cudiamat dished out 20 assists apiece while libero Rachel Krasowski totaled a match-high 16 digs.
Providence was led by Jennifer Leitman's seven kills.
How it Happened:
Set One – DePaul got off to a fast start in the first set and took a 10-3 lead to force a Friars timeout. The Blue Demons kept the momentum and opened up a 15-5 advantage before Providence went on a 4-0 run to narrow the deficit. Emma Price dropped in back-to-back kills to widen the lead to 22-14 before a Karl kill handed the Blue Demons the first set, 25-16.
Set Two – The second set saw both squads trading points through the first 20 rallies, before an Ashley Cudiamat run behind the service line gave DePaul a 14-10 advantage. The Friars rattled off five of the next six points to knot the score at 17 before the Blue Demons closed the set on a 8-2 run to take a 2-0 lead.
Set Three – The Blue Demons opened the third frame with a 7-3 advantage before Providence responded with a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead. A Bailey Nelson kill followed by three consecutive errors committed by the Friars put DePaul ahead 15-11. Providence remained within a point at 21-20 before the Blue Demons took four of the last five points to claim the road sweep.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "We needed that win badly. This team has been so close the past couple matches that we needed to get over the hump and get back into the win column. Providence forces you to earn it by fighting to keep balance on your side of the net. They are a very hard to team to play because they play a really different style than Creighton. So to get those two teams back to back, it does require a mature ability to flip your brain and hold strong your game. They are tough, and it was a great team win by this group."
Up Next: DePaul returns home to face Seton Hall and St. John's at McGrath-Phillips Arena, Oct. 15-16. The Pirates will visit Lincoln Park on Friday with first serve set for 7 p.m. while the Blue Demons host the Red Storm on Saturday at 6 p.m.
