How it Happened:
Set One – The Blue Demons trailed early in the first set 6-2 but eventually drew even at 14 apiece on a price Kill. DePaul utilized a 3-0 run to take a 17-16 lead on a Nelson termination from the right side. Marquette retook the lead at 20-18 to force a DePaul timeout. The Golden Eagles went up 23-19 before the Blue Demons staved off a pair of set points. After a Coach Zidek timeout, DePaul fired off a serve out of bounds and gave Marquette the first set victory.
Set Two – Much like the start of the first, DePaul fell behind early as Marquette jumped out to a 13-7 advantage and never looked back. The Blue Demons came within four at 13-9 after back-to-back Pressly kills, but that was as close as DePaul could get as the Golden Eagles took the second set 25-17.
Set Three – DePaul ran out to a 9-6 advantage in the third after a Nelson termination. A successful swing from Price on the right side knotted the score at 13 before the Golden Eagles took 10 of the next 12 points to go up 23-15. Werch's ninth kill of the afternoon sealed the set for Marquette, 25-17.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: We fought really well and it was a nice response with the level of competitiveness we brought to Marquette. They served extremely well and had to hit some pretty extreme shots to beat us. Our defense put us in positions to turn points, and we will continue learn to access the high parts of our game when the going gets tough.
Up Next: The Blue Demons hit the road to take on No. 16 Creighton on Friday Oct. 8 before traveling to Providence, Rhode Island to face the Friars on Sunday, Oct. 10. Friday's matchup will be broadcast by Nebraska Public Media and available to stream for free at nebraskapublicmedia.org while Sunday's match will be streamed on FloSports.
