Blue Demons hit the road for pair of BIG EAST matches, Oct. 8 & 10
CHICAGO – DePaul women's volleyball will hit the road this weekend to take on No. 19 Creighton followed by a trip to Providence to the BIG EAST swing.
On Friday, Oct. 8 the Blue Demons will play in front of a sold-out crowd at D.J. Sokol Arena with first serve set for 6:30 p.m. Fans can catch the action live for free on Nebraska Public Media at https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/watch/live/.
Sunday's match at Alumni Hall is set for a Noon CT start and can be streamed on FloSports.
Demon Doings: DePaul will look to get back in the win column after dropping a pair of matches last weekend to Connecticut and Marquette. The Blue Demons hold a 9-7 record on the season and 2-2 mark in conference play.
Sophomore Jill Pressly leads the Blue Demon attack with 3.58 kills per set on the season and 4.08 in conference matches. Pressly has tallied a team-high 10 double-doubles on the season including two in BIG EAST action.
On the right side, Emma Price has totaled 35 kills for 2.92 per set through four conference matches while Bailey Nelson has terminated on 30 occasions (2.50 per set).
Defensively, middle blockers Donna Brown and Aly Kindelberger have had a hand in 14 blocks apiece in league play with libero Rachel Krasowski picking up 4.00 digs per set in the back row.
The Blue Demons are 4-1 on the road in the 2021 season.
Scouting the Competition:
Creighton: The Bluejays enter the weekend with a 15-2 record on the season and 3-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Creighton's lone conference loss came last weekend when St. John's topped the then-ranked No. 16 Bluejays, 3-1. All-American outside hitter Jaela Zimmerman leads the attack averaging 3.98 kills per set while freshman pin Norah Sis provides 3.39 kills per set. Libero Abby Bottomley leads the conference in digs per set with 5.34 digs per set while freshman setter Kendra Wait has dished out 593 assists on the season. Kirsten Bernthal Booth is in her 19th season at the helm of the Creighton program.
Providence: Providence went 12-1 in non-conference play before beginning BIG EAST action with a 1-3 record through the first two weekends. The Friars picked up their lone conference win last weekend with a 3-1 victory over St. John's. Freshman outside hitter Shaliyah Rhoden leads the attack with 3.51 kills per set. Graduate setter Allison Barber returns to the lineup in the fall of 2021 and has dished out 655 assists on the season to become the all-time assists leader in program history. Margot Royer Johnson is in her 21st season leading the Friars program.
Series Stuff: Creighton holds a 16-1 advantage in the all-time series history between the two programs. Since the pair became BIG EAST opponents, the Bluejays have won 16 matches in a row. The Blue Demons hold a 9-5 edge over Providence and won the last two meetings in the 2019 season.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Creighton has a similar roster to ours. A blend of their usual impact players sprinkled in with new players making immediate impact at key positions of outside and setter. We know we will have to manage their outside, Zimmerman, while making sure we score with a well-balanced offense. This is one of our most challenging yet excitable weekends due to different styles of play at Creighton and Providence. Creighton tends to rely on their pins a little more while Providence tends to find their attackers from everywhere, and with Barber back as their setter, that team plays very confidently. It's going to be a battle, and we are due for a match weekend that forces us to keep reaching for that higher gear."
Up Next: DePaul returns home Oct. 15-16 to host Seton Hall and St. John's at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons will face the Pirates on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting the Red Storm for a 6 p.m. first serve on Saturday.
