How it Happened:
Set One: Both squads were knotted at 11 apiece before the Bluejays took five of the next six points to pull ahead 16-12. DePaul responded with a 3-0 run behind a pair of kills from Pressly and Brown and a double block from the duo to close the gap to 16-15. A Creighton attack error evened the match at 19 apiece before the Bluejays tallied five of the last six points in the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two: Creighton opened up the second set with an 8-3 surge. The Blue Demons cut the deficit to four at 12-8 with back-to-back kills from Pressly and Nelson. The visitors responded with seven of the next nine tallies to widen the margin to 19-10. DePaul closed the gap to 21-16 after a Pressly kill to force a Creighton timeout. Out of the break, the Bluejays rattled off four in a row to take a 2-0 lead.
Set Three: After 10 rallies in the third, the score was knotted at five apiece before Creighton went on a 9-2 run to take a 15-8 lead. A pair of CU errors cut the deficit to five at 15-10. Another 4-1 run from the Bluejays pushed the score to 19-11 before the Blue Demons responded with three points of their own to come within five again. Creighton ended the set on a 6-1 spurt to take the match 3-0.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Great gritty fight from our defense and back court. Rachel, Hanna, Jill, and Phoenix made some phenomenal plays. Our hustle was exactly the style of volleyball we play. We did a great job of neutralizing their attackers and in creating opportunities for our hitters. Creighton is experienced and they can sense when teams start to take away their strengths that they must level up their block and defense. That's exactly what happened. Wait, their setter, and their back court just went off, and they made it extremely hard for our attackers to score. This is a match our attackers can learn from, and although we took the loss, you get better through experiences like this."
Dig Pink Update: The Blue Demons, in partnership with the SideOut Foundation, designated Saturday as it's Dig Pink match and raised awareness and funds for breast cancer research. DePaul donned special pink warm-ups and bow fixtures in their hair in honor of fighters, survivors and those who have lost their battle with cancer. With the support of family, friends, and fans DePaul was successful in reaching and surpassing its fundraising goal and raising $1,100 towards research for metastatic breast cancer patients.
Up Next: The. Blue Demons will hit the road for the next two weekends of BIG EAST action. DePaul will kick off the road swing with a trip to take on St. John's and Seton Hall Nov. 5-6
