The Blue Demons strung together five points in a row to widen the lead to 16-10 and force the Red Storm to use their second timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, a St. John's termination and a pair of Rastelli service aces brought the Johnnies within three. The Blue Demons jumped out to a 20-13 advantage with a 4-0 run before St. John's responded with a 5-0 run to come within two at 20-18. DePaul closed out the first winning five of the last seven points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two: The Blue Demons won four of the first five points in the second to force an early St. John's timeout. The Red Storm responded with an 8-2 run to force a DePaul timeout trailing 9-6. A double block from Brown and Price brought the Blue Demons within one at 12-11 before the Johnnies rattled off three in a row to expand the advantage to four. After falling behind 20-14, the Blue Demons came within four at 22-18 to force a St. John's timeout. St. John's evened the match at one apiece with a 25-20 set-two victory.
Set Three: DePaul opened the third set with a 3-0 run before the Red Storm responded with an 10-2 run of their own to take an 10-5 lead. Back-to-back kills from Karl brought the Blue Demons within two at 11-9. Consecutive St. John's attack errors knotted the match at 12 apiece. A Krasowski service ace followed by a Price and Brown block put the Blue Demons on top 16-15. The Red Storm won four of five points to tie the score at 21 apiece before a Bailey Nelson and Aly Kindelberger put DePaul back on top. A Lee service ace and Karl kill handed DePaul set point before Price put away her sixth kill of the afternoon to claim the third set and a 2-1 match lead.
Set Four: The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair in the early going. Rastelli's 16th kill of the night gave the Red Storm a 14-12 lead before Brown answered right back with her sixth termination of the night to bring DePaul back within one. A Blue Demons attack error followed by a Rastelli kill extended the Red Storm lead to 16-13 and force a DePaul timeout. DePaul responded with a 3-0 run of their own to bring the score to 16 apiece behind a pair or Karl kills to force the Red Storm to call timeout. A Blue Demon attack error followed by a Walther termination put St. John's back in front 20-18. DePaul won six of the last seven points of the set to claim the third set 25-22 and win the match 3-1.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Wow what a match. We schemed a little bit better on their best player, Rastelli, and hats off to St. John's they found another way to battle us. We relied heavily on our pins tonight and leaned into our block, defense, and service game hard. Everybody had to step up in a match where our middles weren't as offensive as they have been. It was great to see Emma, Donna, and Bailey beat that St Johns team on their home court, and Donna stuff blocking Rastelli on match point is a narrative we will remember a long time. We have had our hearts broken here for the past 3 years, so to finally break through here is a major momentum builder for this program."
Up Next: The Blue Demons will close out its penultimate BIG EAST road trip of the season with a trip to South Orange, N.J. to take on Seton Hall on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. Saturday night's match can be seen on FloSports.
