Eleanor Nobbs notches big singles win against Washington State
SEATTLE – DePaul continued to take on some of the top teams in the nation Saturday in day two of the Husky Invitational hosted by Washington.
Going head-to-head against a Washington State team that finished last season ranked No. 53 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 75 national rankings, the Blue Demons came up short in four of five matches.
Freshman Eleanor Nobbs came through for coach Marisa Arce's team with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Fifa Kumhum.
Maddie Yergler hung tough in her singles match, winning the second set to even the score. But Maxine Murphy eventually prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Also in singles, DePaul came close against Portland State. Kaya Rand came very close to winning her match, taking the first set against Maddie Egan and having opportunities to pick up the win in the second set during six tiebreaks.
But Egan fought back and emerged with a hard-earned 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 victory.
Valentina Martin won the first set against Portland State's Nika Beukers who bounced back in her 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision.
The host Huskies who were No. 43 in the ITA rankings swept all three doubles matches against the Blue Demons on their home court, the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Sunday will find Arce & Co. going head-to-head in singles against an Oregon team that finished 2020-21 ranked No. 46.
