Held leads DePaul with 19 points, Morris 16 and Rogers 14 points and 14 rebounds
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – There's usually fireworks galore and a lot of glitzy offensive numbers when RV/RV DePaul and No. 24/17 Texas A&M collide on the basketball court.
On this a night when its usual accuracy was missing in action, the Blue Demons dropped a 95-75 decision to the team from the Lone Star State.
Lexi Held led five Blue Demons in double figures with 19 points while Sonya Morris scored 16. Darrione Rogers had a double-double of 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds while Deja Church scored 14 going 10-of-11 from the line. Aneesah Morrow finished with 12 points, six blocks and five steals.
DePaul (2-1) shot just 36.6 percent from the field including 4-of-23 from behind the arc. Texas A&M improved to 3-0.
Digging out of an 11-point halftime hole wouldn't be easy against a Top 25 team. After a pair of Held free throws early in the third quarter, it was still an 11-point game.
DePaul was down 10 when the Aggies scored five-straight for a 57-42 advantage at the third quarter media timeout.
The game got away from DePaul after that. An Aggie three-pointer just before the buzzer made it 78-53 as the home team outscored its guest 30-16 in the third quarter.
Held had a basket followed by a three-pointer and it was 82-58 at the fourth quarter media timeout. Five in a row by DePaul made it 85-63.
The Blue Demons hit just three of their first 10 shots and fell behind 12-8 at the first quarter media timeout. Texas A&M made five of eight. Held, Morris and Morrow had the visiting team baskets.
Destiny Pitts, arguably the Aggies' best player, picked up two quick fouls and was sitting before the timeout.
Down by eight, Ammons buried a pair of free throws an Church followed with a jumper to bring their team within 21-17.
But Texas A&M closed out the first quarter scoring the final five points for a 26-17 lead.
DePaul was trailing by 10 when five Held points and a Morris bucket narrowed the deficit to five. The Aggies fired back and led 35-28 at the second quarter media timeout.
Towards the end of the quarter, Jordan Nixon temporarily took over the game. Texas A&M's leading scorer on the season scored 11 on her own. When the smoke cleared, the home team was up 46-30.
The Blue Demons closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run with five points from Rogers as coach Doug Bruno looked for a way to turn this game around from a 48-37 halftime deficit.
Nixon had 15 points in the quarter including four connections from behind the arc and 19 at the break. Morris and Rogers had 10 points apiece and Held seven. Morrow had six points, five blocks and two steals.
