Blue Demons end historic season 19-12
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship, the DePaul women's volleyball team fell short in Friday's semifinal match against Creighton at the Al McGuire Center.
No. 4 seed DePaul (19-12, 12-6 BIG EAST) saw its phenomenal season come to an end in a three-set (16-25, 15-25, 18-25) decision to the conference's eight-time regular season champions.
Jill Pressly tallied a team-high 11 kills to go along with seven digs and a pair of solo blocks. Pressly wrapped her sophomore campaign with an All-Tournament Team selection.
Emma Price added eight kills on the right side while Hanna Karl chipped in six kills and six digs.
Rachel Krasowski picked up 11 digs while Molly Muriihy totaled 26 assists and eight digs.
The Bluejays were led by BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Norah Sis and her match-high 15 kills while libero Abby Bottomley picked up a match-high 14 digs.
Creighton put up 14 blocks to DePaul's five as the Blue Demons were limited to a .088 hitting percentage.
How it Happened:
Set One: The Bluejays took a 5-1 lead to start the match before Pressly's first kill of the match ended the Creighton run. Back-to-back kills from Sis and a DePaul attack error pushed the deficit to eight at 12-4 to force a Blue Demons timeout. A 3-0 spurt from DePaul brought the Blue Demons within six at 16-10 after a pair of Nelson and Murrihy block on the outside. A 4-0 run from DePaul capped by a Pressly kill forced a Creighton timeout at 22-16. The Bluejays claimed the first set 25-16 after a Keeley Davis termination.
Set Two: Much like the first set, the Bluejays ran out to an 8-3 lead behind four blocks in the early going. Kills from Pressly, Karl and Price in the span of four points brought DePaul within five at 13-8. The Bluejays ran off an 8-0 run to take a 21-8 lead. Back-to-back blocks from Pressly followed by a Murrihy kill sent DePaul on a 4-0 run to force a Creighton timeout. A DePaul service error handed the Bluejays the second set 25-15.
Set Three: Creighton opened a 10-2 advantage before Pressly put down her ninth kill of the afternoon to stop the run. A 4-0 run for the Bluejays pushed the deficit to 18-8 before a 5-0 run from the Blue Demons cut into the lead at 23-16. Price's eighth kill of the evening staved off the initial match point before a DePaul service error gave Creighton the third set and the match.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "So proud of this groups fight and for the body of work they produced this season. The team has tremendous momentum and we look forward to build off of this experience. We are very thankful to our seniors and look forward to continuing to set higher bars."
DePaul's 19 wins marks the most since the 2001 season, while its 12 conference victories are the most since joining the league in 2005. The Blue Demons end the season above .500 for just the fourth time since becoming a BIG EAST member.
Friday marked the end of the road for DePaul's six amazing seniors including Donna Brown, Allison Dennemann, Mireya Garcia, Molly Murrihy, Emma Price and Meredith Wallace.
