U.S. Basketball Writers Association recognizes double-double against No. 14 Kentucky
CHICAGO – Aneesah Morrow's breakout freshman season is taking on more and more implications on the national scene.
On Tuesday just about the time DePaul was taking care of business with a 100-72 victory over Nicholls State for ifs fifth win in a row, Morrow was honored as the National Freshman of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).
After becoming the first player in BIG EAST history to open the season winning five consecutive BIG EAST Freshman of the Week awards, now Morrow has gone national.
It is richly deserved. Morrow has taken the NCAA women's basketball world by storm, beginning with her 31-point NCAA debut in DePaul's 114-71 season-opening triumph over Texas Southern.
She became the first player in coach Doug Bruno's 36 years to score that many points in her first NCAA game.
Since then, Morrow has made an even bigger impact.
The 6-foot, 1-inch power forward from Simeon surprised No. 4/8 Arizona with 24 points and 16 rebounds in a 75-68 loss that was a one-possession game much of the fourth quarter.
Morrow had 28 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Vanderbilt and 24 points and 19 boards in a victory over Xavier.
What caught the USBWA's attention was Morrow's 18 points and 17 rebounds in last Thursday's 94-85 upset of a Kentucky team ranked No. 14/14 heading into the showdown at Rupp Arena.
More than a month into the season, Morrow leads the nation among freshmen in rebounding and is second in scoring.
The Her Hoops Stats website and newsletter ranked the Blue Demon rookie as the No. 1 freshman in the country after one month.
The BIG EAST dominated this week's USBWA awards with Villanova's Maddy Siegrist being named Ann Meyers Drysdale Women's National Player of the Week and Morrow the Tamika Catchings Women's Freshman Player of the Week.
Appropriately enough, Catchings was the TV analyst for the SEC Network telecast of DePaul's win over Kentucky.
Siegrist averaged 32 points and 13 rebounds in powering the Wildcats to victories over James Madison and No. 23 Oregon State.
Morrow has led the Blue Demons to a 9-2 record and a five-game winning streak averaging 18 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for National Player of the Year and National Freshman of the Year which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA.
Georgia Tech was named National Team of the Week after its upset of No. 3/2 Connecticut.
The Blue Demons renew a local rivalry with Northern Illinois on Thursday with a 7 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena.
