CHICAGO – It's always pretty intense and at times a little heated when a couple of fierce rivals like No. 24/23 DePaul and RV/RV Marquette collide on a basketball court.
Well, the stakes are higher than ever Wednesday for the 4 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena that will be shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network/FloSports.
DePaul, Marquette and Villanova are locked in a three-way fight for the runner-up spot in the BIG EAST standings. Whoever emerges with the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST tournament won't have to face overwhelming favorite No. 1/1 Connecticut until the championship game.
DePaul coach Doug Bruno believes his team can control its own destiny by winning out in their remaining three games.
In this unparalleled season of pandemic basketball with COVID-19 tearing asunder any uniformity with the league schedule, the BIG EAST will determine final standings based upon winning percentage.
Bruno & Co. will enter the South Loop with an overall record of 13-5 and 10-3 in the BIG EAST. The Golden Eagles are 16-4, 13-3. A win for the home team would leave Marquette 13-4 and still having to face UConn in the regular-season finale.
Villanova is 8-4 in the BIG EAST and couldn't catch a DePaul team that wins out.
First things, first. Overcoming Marquette is a demanding challenge. When these two teams hooked up 16 days ago in Milwaukee, the Blue Demons led by two at halftime and by four heading into a fourth quarter where the Golden Eagles kept it tight the whole way before succumbing 87-82.
Each team had four players in double figures on Feb. 7 as Deja Church led DePaul with a career-high 24 points while Sonya Morris tallied 23, Dee Bekelja 18 and Lexi Held 17. Jordan King and Lauren Van Kleunen each scored 21 for Marquette.
A key matchup to watch on the BEDN live stream is DePaul's leading scorer Sonya Morris (18.9 points a game) going head-to-head with Marquette's Selena Lott (15 points and 5.2 assists a game) who also tops her team in three-pointers, steals and blocked shots.
Bruno's vaunted full-court pressure defense will play a huge role in the outcome of this Wintrust Wednesday thriller. In the first encounter, the Blue Demons forced 22 Marquette turnovers that were converted into 33 points.
DePaul is No. 6 in the nation at forcing turnovers with an average of 22.5 per game.
The four-guard attack of Morris, Held, Church and Bekelja relies heavily on their mainstay down low, the 6-foot, 1-inch Jorie Allen who has displayed a deft scoring touch in the paint while also battling for rebounds and 50-50 balls with her physical play.
The X factor for Bruno and his coaching staff is 5-11 guard Darrione Rogers who joins Allen as the team's toughest rebounders. The freshman from Lake Park could be due for a breakout game.
