Blue Demons go 2-0 on the weekend over the Bulldogs
CHICAGO – DePaul extended its win streak to three on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-18) sweep of Butler at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
The Blue Demons were paced by 10 kills apiece from junior Donna Brown and freshman Jill Pressly. Rachel Krasowski and Hannah Karl each tallied 11 digs in the back row while Molly Murrihy dished out 18 assists.
DePaul (3-3, 3-3 BIG EAST) posted eight blocks on the afternoon and held Butler (3-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) to .072 hitting.
"Big win for our seniors today. Finally got the Butler sweep that has escaped us the past two years. So proud of this group, their work ethic, and their growth" said Head Coach Marie Zidek after the win.
"This will be a hard week of practice and we look forward to getting Creighton just when we are starting to put some nice parts of our systems together."
"Really can't say enough of how Avarie, Belle, and Emma propelled this program forward the past couple years and this year especially when things have been the toughest. Tremendous group of young women" concluded Zidek on graduating seniors Avarie Evans-Allen, Isabelle Banez, and Emma Price.
In the first set, both sides traded points and remained knotted at 12 apiece before a 4-0 run by the Blue Demons gave them the edge for good. Butler rattled off a four point run of their own to come within one at 18-17. An ensuing Bulldogs attack error along with Bailey Nelson and Hanna Karl kills gave DePaul a 21-17 edge. Butler's ninth attack error of the frame gave DePaul the point to win set one, 25-21.
DePaul was in control for the entire second stanza after a 5-1 run to open the set. The Blue Demons led 16-7 to force a Butler timeout. Out of the break, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run before an Evans-Allen kill sparked the Blue Demons response. Pressly's third kill of the set clinched a 2-0 match lead for DePaul.
The Blue Demons closed out the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third set. DePaul pushed the score the margin to four at 12-8 with Donna Brown behind the service line. A Karl kill from the outside gave DePaul their largest lead of the set at 17-10 and forced a Butler timeout. The Bulldogs threatened at 20-18 before DePaul won the remaining five points to take the match.
The Blue Demons hit the road to conclude BIG EAST play with a pair of matches at Creighton, March 5-6. First serve on Friday and Saturday is set for 11 a.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena.
