Blue Demons fall to Marquette, 77-71, Tuesday night in final home game of regular season
CHICAGO – DePaul closed out its regular season schedule on Tuesday night dropping a 77-71 decision to Marquette at Wintrust Arena. Pauly Paulicap tallied a game-high 20 points to lead the Blue Demons while Ray Salnave recorded 13 points and collected seven rebounds.
After starting the game 0-for-3 from the field, DePaul made four of its next five baskets to come within two at the first media timeout. Out of the break, Marquette embarked on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 18-9.
With 5:30 remaining in the first half, the Blue Demons took the lead for the first time as a Paulicap runner in the lane put DePaul ahead 30-29.
DePaul went on a 6-0 run late in the first to take a 36-32 lead and force a Marquette timeout. The Blue Demons would go scoreless for the last 2:17 of the first half and head into the locker room knotted with the Golden Eagles at 36.
Paulicap posted a team-high eight points in the first half, while Moore and Salnave had seven apiece.
Despite a frenetic pace and cold offensive shooting on both sides of the floor, DePaul found themselves trailing 51-45 with less than eight minutes to go. Out of the media time out, the Blue Demons would break open a 7-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 52-51.
Marquette (12-13, 7-11 BIG EAST) scored on their next six possessions to retake the lead that they would never relinquish and pull ahead by as many as nine with 2:26 on the clock.
DePaul (4-13, 2-13 BIG EAST) cut it to five with 34 seconds remaining after a Salnave layup before the Golden Eagles would make seven of nine free throws to clinch the victory.
D.J. Carton netted 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles with 17 coming in the second half.
DePaul returns to the court on Wednesday, March 10 for the first round of the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Tournament hosted at Madison Square Garden. The 11th-seeded Blue Demons face the No. 6 seed to be determined at 8 p.m. CT with coverage carried on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM).
