Blue Demons return to action Sunday at Northern Iowa
DePaul dropped a three-set match to No. 23 Creighton on Saturday afternoon, 22-25, 20-25, 13-25.
Meredith Wallace led DePaul (3-5, 3-5 BIG EAST) with eight kills while Avarie Evans-Allen tallied six kills and one block. Rachel Krasowski picked up 10 digs and Molly Murrihy notched 15 assists to go with seven digs.
"Tough lesson for our team today. We were able dial in to some adjustments from yesterday but it seemed that all of Creighton's attackers also did the same. We were not able to produce at the offensive level and get the number of attack attempts needed to match Creighton's arms" said Head Coach Marie Zidek.
"We find ourselves with a unique opportunity to show some resiliency in tomorrow's match. It is a great opportunity for our team as a unit to flip our game and learn from these matches."
In the first set, Creighton jumped out to a 10-7 lead before back-to-back kills from Donna Brown and Avarie Evans-Allen cut the deficit to one. At the media break, the Blue Demons trailed by four, 15-11. The Bluejays kept DePaul at an arm's length as the teams traded points until an Evans-Allen kill followed by a Murrihy service ace cut the deficit to two at 20-18. A Meredith Wallace kill staved off set point before a Creighton kill gave the Bluejays the first set, 25-22.
Through the first 10 points in the second set the score was knotted at five before the Bluejays won four of the next five points to jump out to a 9-6 lead. Bailey Nelson and Evans-Allen tapped in consecutive kills to narrow the deficit to one. Consecutive Creighton blocks put the Blue Demons behind, 14-9. An Allison Dennemann kill earned DePaul its 12th point of the set before Creighton went on a 4-2 run to lead 20-14 and force a Blue Demon timeout. DePaul responded out of the break winning four of five points to narrow the gap to 22-18. Creighton went on to clinch the second set, 25-20, to move ahead in the match 2-0.
DePaul jumped out to an early 3-2 lead before the Bluejays recorded six straight points to grab an 8-3 advantage. The Blue Demons recorded back-to-back points for the first time in the third set behind a Bailey Nelson and Evans-Allen block followed by a Emma Price kill to cut the deficit to 12-7. A 3-0 run for the Blue Demons including a libero kill from Krasowski gave DePaul some energy at 20-13 before the Bluejays won the ensuing five points to clinch the set and win the match.
