Coach Bruno lands talented point guard through NCAA transfer portal
CHICAGO – Kierra Collier must have made a favorable impression on DePaul coach Doug Bruno and his coaching staff.
Collier was the Drake point guard who sparked her team to a 100-91 victory over the Blue Demons March 20 at the WNIT Regional in Rockford, Ill.
The talented 5-foot, 6-inch junior finished with 21 points and seven assists, shooting 5-of-8 from three-point range.
One month later, Collier is a Blue Demon after entering the NCAA transfer portal and landing in Lincoln Park.
The heady facilitator will help fill a missing element from the 2020-21 season. Despite a loaded backcourt featuring All-BIG EAST First Team selections Sonya Morris and Lexi Held, All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention Dee Bekelja plus the versatile Deja Church and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team guard Darrione Rogers---Bruno and his staff did their best to mitigate the need for a true point guard.
That is Collier's forte. In addition to leading Drake in assists at 4.2 per game, the Lee Summit, Mo. native was the Bulldogs' second-leading scorer at 11.7 points a game. Her 38 percent accuracy from behind the arc will dovetail nicely with the "DePaulBall" style of play.
She was at her best last season in a game against Big Ten power Iowa with a career-high 25 points and a career-high 10 assists. She went 7-of-9 from deep---the third-highest, single-game mark for three-pointers in Bulldog history.
Collier capped off her season being named All-MVC Honorable Mention.
After a stellar high school career which included scoring more than 1,200 points in three years at Truman in Independence, Mo., the three-time All-Stater and two-time Player of the Year finalist signed with Washington.
As a freshman, Collier had 14 starts in her 25 games and was named Pac-12 All-Freshmen Team Honorable Mention. She transferred to Drake after her first year in Seattle.
"Kierra Collier brings much needed depth to an already strong, returning backcourt," Bruno said. "Kierra is a long, quick and explosive guard who can get to the rim, knock down the three ball, and is also a very good passer.
"Defensively, Kierra's speed and quickness will prove valuable in our DePaulBall pressure system. Versatility is an additional strength as she can play any of our backcourt positions.
"Having just played against Drake and Kierra in our final game of the season gave our team and coaching staff a rare, in-person, live evaluation opportunity not always available in recruiting transfers."
