Chouinard Claims Conference Title, DePaul Completes Day One at BIG EAST Championships

Chouinard wins second-straight outdoor conference title
GENEVA, Ohio - DePaul's Rebecca Chouinard claimed her second straight outdoor BIG EAST conference championship in the women's hammer throw on Friday afternoon at the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The title highlighted a day of action for the Blue Demons in Geneva, Ohio where a number of others qualified for tomorrow's finals.
Chouinard set a new personal record with a toss of 60.80m in the hammer throw, claiming the conference crown. Chouinard set a new personal best back on May 1 and was able to improve upon the career-best mark to win the title.
In other field events that wrapped up on day one, DePaul claimed a pair of top-three finishes. Tori Carroll finished second in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.01m and Ben Litwin earned a third-place finish in the men's hammer with a distance of 55.87m.
In the prelims of the track events, DePaul had nine athletes qualify for the finals which will take place tomorrow. Isabel Ingram and Dylan Armstrong both advanced to the finals of the 100m hurdles, finishing third and sixth in their heat, respectively.
In the 400m dash, DePaul earned wins in both the men's and women's heats. Kiersten Walker and Jarel Terry both won to move on to Saturday's finals. In the 100m dash, Tori Carroll qualified by winning her heat while Adam Nelson and Kyle Mastrangeli both won their heats to advance. Nelson set a personal best with a time of 10.50, the fastest time he's ran since finishing second in the event at the 2018 outdoor conference championships. Nelson also advanced to the finals in the 200m dash, finishing third with a time of 21.25, a personal best.
Finally, Kiersten Walker matched her personal best in the 200m dash, winning her heat with a time of 24.08. Walker will look to win her first conference title in the event tomorrow after notching second and third-place finishes during the last two outdoor championship meets.
