Men's soccer, men's tennis and men's basketball all finish in Top 10 nationally in their respective sprorts
CHICAGO – DePaul's student-athletes continued a tradition and commitment to community service and didn't let limitations to social gathering to keep everyone safe as they finished 14th in the NCAA Division I Team Works Challenge. The Team Works Challenge with partner Helper Helper allows schools to track and manage their annual community service efforts.
Beginning in 2015, NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, partnered with Helper Helper, a volunteer tracking app and management platform, to create the NCAA Team Works Challenge to recognize student-athletes from across the country who give back to their communities. The competition, which ran from January through March, was based on the number of service hours completed and the number of participating student-athletes. DePaul's 14th-place finish this year bettered their 15th-place showing a year ago.
Three teams placed in the Top 10 nationally in their respective sport at the Division I level as men's soccer was fifth nationally, men's tennis was ranked 6th for the second straight year and men's basketball was ranked 10th among its peers in the country. Despite all of this year's challenges, student-athletes across all NCAA divisions volunteered for more than 32,000 hours, which resulted in an economic impact of $887,236.
Through these extraordinary times, DePaul athletics continued to collaborate with many local organizations including local children's hospitals, Marillac St. Vincent Family Services, Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly and the Salvation Army. With an emphasis on remote service, the student-athletes participated in many volunteer opportunities such as blanket making, letter writing and donation drives. Earlier this year student-athletes brought the joy and excitement of reading to elementary school students through the Wintrust Reads Virtual Kids Library video series, which can be viewed below.
