DePaul turns its attention to Chicago Cup, Sept. 17-18
CHICAGO – DePaul women's volleyball fell 3-1 to visiting Oakland in its DePaul Invitational finale Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Despite winning the first set, the Blue Demons couldn't find an answer in the ensuing three sets as the Golden Grizzlies claimed the 2021 DePaul Invitational title.
Set scores for the match were 25-22, 15-25, 16-25, 22-25.
Hanna Karl paced the Blue Demons with a career-high 14 kills to go along with nine digs, while right side Emma Price put down 12 kills at a .310 clip.
Rachel Krasowski tallied a match-high 20 digs to extend her double-digit digs streak to 19 starts.
Tournament MVP, Jamie Walling, led the way for Oakland with 21 kills.
Set One: DePaul jumped out to an early 6-3 lead behind four kills from Price. After the Golden Grizzlies knotted the match at seven, the Blue Demons mounted a 4-0 run behind a pair of Wallace kills and a stuff block from Brown and Wallace to force an Oakland timeout. The Blue Demons took a 17-13 lead on Price's fifth kill of the first frame. The Golden Grizzlies went on a 3-0 run of their own to cut the Blue Demons lead to 21-19 and force a DePaul timeout. Price's sixth kill on her seventh attempt gave DePaul the set 25-22 and a 1-0 match lead.
Set Two: The second set saw Oakland take a 10-1 lead out of the gate before Allison Dennemann dropped in a kill to end the Blue Demons drought. DePaul strung together a 7-0 run with Ashley Cudiamat behind the service line to cut the deficit to six, but it wasn't enough as the Grizzlies went on to even the match with a 25-14 set two win.
Set Three: The third set started much like the second, with Oakland taking an early 7-1 lead. The Blue Demons came within five at 12-7, but that was the closest they would come as the Golden Grizzlies took the third set 25-16 and a 2-1 match lead.
Set Four: Set four saw both squads trade point for point until DePaul opened a 6-0 run to take a 18-13 advantage. The Golden Grizzlies weren't going away easily as the visitors came within two at 22-20 to force a DePaul timeout. Out of the timeout, Oakland put up a 5-0 run to claim the set and the match, 3-1.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule at the Chicago Cup, Sept. 17-18. DePaul will face Loyola-Chicago on Friday, before meeting Northwestern and UIC on Saturday afternoon. All matches are set to be played at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
