DePaul taken down by the Wildcats, 2-0
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer was held scoreless in Evanston, Ill. on Wednesday night, dropping its final non-conference match of the season to the Northwestern Wildcats, 2-0. Heading into the match after a key conference-opening win over UConn, DePaul could not put the finishing touches on its chances in Evanston on Wednesday evening.
After the Blue Demons (5-3) found the first few looks at goal in the match on the shore of Lake Michigan, Northwestern (3-5-2) was able to find the back of the net first. Spencer Farina scored off of a set piece to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute. Farina found a well-placed cross and headed home a shot to the bottom left corner of the net.
The Northwestern defense was able to dig in after gaining the lead and denied the Blue Demons of quality looks on target. After the teams entered the break with a 1-0 scoreline, Northwestern was able to extend the lead just over 10 minutes into the second half.
Justin Weiss was able to fire off a left-footed shot that soared into the upper corner past DePaul's Gandhi Cruz. The strike doubled the Wildcat lead and left the Blue Demons fighting to pull back into the match. The Blue Demons fired off four shots to Northwestern's three in the second half, but none of the DePaul attempts ended on target.
