eventuallyDAYTON, Ohio – Despite leading 2-0 and later being pushed to a fifth set, DePaul volleyball claimed a 3-2 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 16-25, 15-9) victory over Marshall in the opening match of the Tru By Hilton Dayton Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd totaled 14 blocks while Ciara DeBell paced the Marshall attack with 11 kills and 16 digs.
Set One: The Blue Demons jumped out to an early 11-8 lead in the opening frame. Pressly opened strong with four kills and a service ace while Price knocked in three kills on four swings. The Thundering Herd knotted the score at 14 before being forced to use a timeout late in the first set after consecutive kills by Brown and Pressly extended the Blue Demons advantage to 19-16. DePaul won six of the next nine points to close out the first set and take an early 1-0 advantage.
Set Two: DePaul picked up the momentum from the first set to jump out to an early 8-2 advantage and force an early Marshall timeout. Kindelberger saw three early kills to pace the Blue Demons. A Thundering Herd attack error followed by consecutive kills by Pressly extended the advantage to 14-5 before Marshall went on a 4-0 run. DePaul responded with a 4-0 run of their own thanks to a Bailey Nelson kill and three Marshall attack errors to extend the lead to 19-10. Despite a few errors late in the second, the Blue Demons cruised to a 25-16 second set victory to go up 2-0 on the match.
Set Three: Marshall opened up set three with a 5-1 advantage to force an early timeout by Coach Zidek. The Blue Demons trailed 11-3 before embarking on a 3-0 run with Krasowski behind the service line. Brown's fourth kill of the afternoon cut the deficit back to 13-8 before the Herd eventually widened the lead to 18-11. Trailing 21-15, the Blue Demons strung together a 3-0 run behind kills from Kindelberger, Brown and Nelson to pull within three but couldn't hold on as the Herd took set three, 25-21.
Set Four: The beginning of set four panned out similarly to set three with the Herd taking an early 4-1 lead. DePaul went on a 4-0 run with Krasowski behind the service line to come within striking distance at 17-14. Marshall won eight of the last 10 points to claim the set and force a fifth frame.
Set Five: DePaul started fast in the fifth set with an early 5-1 lead to force a Marshall timeout. The Herd cut the lead to two at 9-7 before consecutive Karl kills pushed the Blue Demons back on top, 11-7. Consecutive kills by Pressly followed by a Brown kill on an overpass clinched the set for the Blue Demons and the match, 3-2.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Gritty win against a tough Marshall team. They have the reigning Defensive Player of the Year from Conference USA in Destiny Leon, and the are a team a lot like Butler in our conference who lives and dies by their block. We knew even though we were up 2-0 in set play that at some point their block was going to show up, and it did in sets 3-4. What our team did that I was really proud of was that we held our strong standard of defense and extending rallies, so we still had offensive momentum going into the fifth set. Typically, a good blocking team would frustrate us and we have struggled in the past to overcome a bigger and better block by tooling it and hitting sharper edges of the court. In this match, Emma Price was able to elevate and adjust to the bigger block by going harder for the edges. She had a couple of kills in the 4th and 5th set that really led the way for us. Donna Brown followed her lead and before long, we had a 3-4 point lead in the fifth set. Really proud of two things in this match: first that our team fought to protect our offensive opportunities through tremendous hustle and second that people elevated and pushed back to a team that was really playing well. Marshall played very well defensively and we were able to rise to the occasion and beat someone who was playing their best defensive match of the year. Proud of how we rallied around each other."
Up Next: DePaul (3-1) returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 4 for a pair of matches. The Blue Demons will meet Ball State at 9 a.m. CT before facing tournament hosts Wright State at 6 p.m.
