Narrow setback concludes action at Arthur Ashe Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Florida Atlantic came into Sunday's match against DePaul having swept both Army West Point and Illinois State without losing a set.
That streak ended pretty quickly when No. 1 singles player Vito Tonejc defeated Carles Sarrio 6-4, 6-1.
But coach Matt Brothers' team could only score twice more in a 4-3 setback that concluded his team's performance at the Arthur Ashe Invitational.
Along with Tonejc, freshmen Marino Jakic and Matteo Iaquinto put points on the board for DePaul.
Jakic, who is ranked No. 124 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 125 players in the nation, prevailed over Alvaro Fernandez Horta in a tough three-set match in the No. 3 singles position 7-6, 3-6, 11-9.
Iaquinto came through with a 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 decision over Gerard Escandell at No. 5.
Tonejc and Jakic won their No. 1 doubles match 6-4 over Kevin Huempfner and Filip Krolo, but FAU won the other two matches to claim the doubles point.
DePaul is back on the courts Saturday to face North Dakota and Wisconsin in Madison.
