Establish new standard reaching triple digits for the seventh time this season
CHICAGO – Enough of these close calls and the suspense-filled tension of pressure-cooker basketball.
Blue Demon nation was ready for a breather on Sunday, and coach Doug Bruno's team delivered with a free-and-easy 102-69 BIG EAST win over Georgetown at Wintrust Arena.
It was the seventh time DePaul (14-4, 6-1 BIG EAST) has reached triple digits this season, setting a new program record. The 2014-15 team and 2016-17 edition each scored 100 in six games.
The Blue Demons are the only team in the BIG EAST to score 100 points so far this season.
Sunday was also a return to "DePaulball" with 27 assists on 38 baskets.
Freshman Aneesah Morrow led the attack with 23 points and 14 rebounds---her 10th consecutive double-double and 13th of the season which leads the nation.
Sonya Morris had 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting while Deja Church scored 19 points and went 5-of-8 from three-point land. Lexi Held had 18 points and was 4-of-8 from deep. That trio combined to shoot 61.8 percent from the field including 57.1 percent behind the arc.
They led the way for a team that knocked down 15 three-pointers which is the second-highest total in a game this season.
DePaul bolted out of the starting gate and never looked back. In the opening two minutes, Darrione Rogers had two steals, an assist, a rebound and a three-pointer. Church also cashed in from long distance and Morris buried a jumper.
Georgetown coach James Howard quickly called timeout.
Whatever strategy he devised didn't account for Church catching fire. The versatile graduate student knocked down three consecutive shots from behind the arc in sparking DePaul to a 30-16 lead after one quarter.
The Blue Demons shot 66.7 percent in the first 10 minutes and went 6-of-10 from three-point range.
Here's a key stat. They had nine assists on 10 baskets. That metric had been AWOL the last two games.
Shots were falling everywhere at the outset of the second quarter. Morris opened with a long-distance connection and followed with a jumper. Then Held buried back-to-back threes.
Timeout Georgetown. DePaul 41, Georgetown 20 with not even three minutes gone by in the second quarter.
The Hoyas (6-6, 1-3) hit a pair of threes to come within 15 when Held converted two free throws, Morrow scored inside and Morris finished off the first half with a jumper for a 51-32 lead.
Morris had 12 points at the break, Held and Church 11, Morrow eight points and eight rebounds and Rogers seven.
DePaulball's mantra of shoot it-or-share it was evident all over the Wintrust Arena court with 13 assists on 17 first-half baskets.
Held's three-pointer, Morrow's post-up basket and a Church three prompted coach Howard to call timeout with his team trailing 59-32 early in the third quarter. The Blue Demons were 11-of-20 from deep at that point.
Morrow, Morris, Held and Church kept the offense rolling. Morris and Held scored back-to-back just before the media timeout for a 71-44 advantage.
The offensive onslaught continued with a Morrow three-point play plus three-balls from Church, Morris and Kierra Collier. Morrow's tough bucket inside provided her team with an 85-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
DePaul was 14-of-28 from behind the arc at that point. Morrow scored two more baskets on tough shots and Collier banked in a runner for a 91-54 lead.
The Blue Demons return to action on Friday with a BIG EAST road test at Xavier.
