Blue Demons jump out to 3-1 lead before Badgers rally
ÂÂMADISON, Wis. – The way coach Matt Brothers and his team jumped out to a quick lead was quite encouraging on Saturday.
But the Blue Demons could not find the clinching point in a 4-3 setback to Wisconsin on its home court.
After sweeping past North Dakota 7-0 earlier in the day, Brothers & Co. were looking to cash in on a daily double.
After Wisconsin (2-0) won the opening doubles match, the stellar combo of Vito Tonejc and Marino Jakic evened the score with a 6-4 decision over Jared Pratt and Gabriel Huber.
That left the doubles point in the capable hands of the No. 3 tandem, and Luuk Wassenaar and Lars Peder Minsaas came through with a 7-5 win over Lenard Soha and Tim Dzhurinskiy.
DePaul went up 2-0 in the match after stellar No. 1 singles standout Tonejc defeated Pratt 6-2, 6-0. The Badgers got on the board with a win at No. 5, ITA No. 124 Jakic came back to beat Lenard Soha 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
That gave the good guys from Lincoln Park a 3-1 lead and needing just one point in the remaining three matches to bring home the W.
It wasn't to be as Wisconsin rallied to win the final three singles matches.
DePaul (3-2) plays its home opener Jan. 30 at XS Tennis versus Illinois-Chicago at 4:15 p.m.
