Match set for 4:15 p.m. at XS Tennis Village on South Side
CHICAGO – It's a perfect fit for the narrative.
For DePaul men's tennis' home opener, coach Matt Brothers and his team will welcome intra-city rival Illinois-Chicago to XS Tennis Village on the South Side.
In their home opener last year, the Blue Demons swept UIC 7-0.
This year's DePaul team (3-2) is a new model with five freshmen joining BIG EAST Player of the Year Vito Tonejc, BIG EAST tournament Most Outstanding Player Luuk Wassenaar, Tripp Tuff, Lars Peder Minsaas and Phasu Sirinit.
One of those newcomers is making an immediate impact as Marino Jakic entered the dual-match season ranked No. 124 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 125.
Another talented rookie, Matteo Iaquinto, off is to a 14-5 start to his collegiate career.
Tonejc is the undisputed leader of the "Band of Brothers" and is 13-6 overall and 5-0 at the No. 1 singles position in the dual season.
Tuff enters the weekend with a 9-6 mark and Minsaas is 7-4. The No. 1 doubles team of Jakic and Tonejc has racked up a 10-4 overall record, 5-0 in dual matches.
UIC brings a 1-3 record to XS Tennis with a win over Eastern Illinois and losses to Grand Valley State, Marquette and Northern Illinois. No. 1 singles player Pelle Strandberg is 3-1 in duals and 8-2 over his last 10 matches.
